TJR Retro: WWF Raw Deal 06/19/00 Review
This was the go-home edition of Raw heading into the King of the Ring PPV on Sunday, June 25, 2000. Due to that, they had six King of the Ring second round matches on this show.
The synopsis for this episode on WWE Network is: “As the King of the Ring tournament continues, CEO Linda McMahon makes an announcement regarding Triple H’s WWE Championship at Judgment Day.”
They screwed up the synopsis. It should say “King of the Ring” at the end, not Judgment Day.
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter covering this week of WWF shows, Dave Meltzer wrote about how the Parents Television Council was really going after the WWF for their content. That’s why the previous Smackdown was tame compared to usual. Raw was a bit more raunchy, but compared to what the WWF was doing in 1998 and 1999 it was pretty tame. Anyway, all the PTC talk led to the WWF creating the RTC (Right to Censor) heel group later in 2000. Worst theme song ever, but at least it wasn’t as bad as Brie Mode.

From Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tennessee
This edition of Raw is rated TV-14 with the dreaded “S” for Sexual Content.
The Raw intro video aired to open the show. It was followed up with the pyro on the stage, the very vocal crowd, the signs were all over the place and we were welcomed to the show by Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Kurt Angle did a promo saying he’s seen rednecks all around the world and you people are the most genuine rednecks, which drew cheers. They did boo the initial redneck remark. JR: “What’s wrong with that?” Angle called Bubba Ray Dudley a redneck, perhaps the biggest redneck of all time. Angle talked about how people in Nashville like to use tables to stack welfare checks or inbreed on them. Angle said he’ll use a table to display his King of the Ring crown and said “it’s true, yee haw.”
A clip was shown from Smackdown when Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley were pushed off the stage while they were in a dumpster. Bubba was selling a rib injury.
They didn’t display the King of the Ring graphics, but I will include them here.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: Kurt Angle vs. Bubba Ray Dudley
Pre-match notes: Angle was the heel and Bubba was the face.
Angle got a pin attempt for two to start the match. Bubba hit a belly to back suplex followed by a shoulder tackle and a clothesline. D-Von Dudley was shown watching backstage. Bubba hit a sitout Powerbomb on Angle for a two count. Bubba went to the apron, Angle grabbed him and hit a belly to belly overhead suplex. Angle tossed Bubba over the top to the floor. Angle whipped Bubba into the barricade two times with Bubba going ribs first into the barricade. Angle gave Bubba a suplex on the ramp. Bubba slowly got back into the ring. Angle with a body slam. Angle went up top for a moonsault, Bubba moved and Angle hit the mat. Bubba with a Samoan Drop followed by a Full Nelson sitout slam for a two count. Bubba charged into the turnbuckle, Angle moved and Angle hit a German Suplex for two. Angle up top again, Bubba tripped him up and Bubba hit a superplex off the middle ropes for a two count. Angle avoided a Cutter, Angle sent Bubba into the ropes and Angle hit the Olympic Slam for the pinfall win at 4:42.
Winner by pinfall: Kurt Angle
Analysis: **3/4 Great work for a match that was under five minutes. Bubba was given a lot of offense and he came close to winning a few times, but Angle made sense as the winner since he was a singles star on the rise while Bubba was in a tag team.
The McMahon-Helmsley Faction were in their office and they were shown walking towards the ring. Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco showed up saying a fax came from Vince’s wife Linda. Patterson said “Linda, the CEO” and Vince was mad about that. Vince grabbed the papers and they left.

Let’s Hear from the McMahon-Helmsley Faction
The McMahon-Helmsley Faction members Vince McMahon (reading the fax), Shane McMahon, WWF Champion Triple H, Women’s Champion Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco made their entrance for the promo segment that they had on every Raw and Smackdown.
Hunter said it’s great being out there as the WWF Champion that is surrounded by family, friends and people that he can count on. While Hunter was talking, Vince was still reading the fax. Hunter focused on Brisco and Patterson.
Hunter said that they had a simple thing last week where they beat up Kane, take the mask off and they take one picture. They screwed it up. Hunter said it didn’t matter who it was because they screwed it up. Hunter said that they will deal with it later. Hunter said that Thursday night, everything worked out like it was planned.
Hunter said that even though Linda McMahon thinks her team (Rock, Undertaker and Kane) is unified, he knows they all want to be the WWF Champion pretty bad, which means they want to be number one contender pretty bad, so he didn’t think they can rely on eachother. Fans chanted “slut” at Stephanie. Hunter said that when King of the Ring is over, The Undertaker, Kane and The Rock will be very disappointed because none of them will be number one contender. Hunter said that means he’ll defend the WWF Championship in July at King of the Ring. Hunter said that they will prevail because this faction is just that damn good. Vince was still reading the paper.
Shane grabbed the microphone, fans chanted “Shane’s a pussy” at him and Shane said he’s a giant killer. Shane also stated that they will be victorious at King of the Ring because they are family, blood is thicker than water and they are unified. A clip aired from Smackdown showing the end of the show when they beat up Rock and Kane while Undertaker was in “jail.” Shane wanted a hug, but Vince was not interested.
Vince said that he loved his wife Linda, but they have had problems of late. Vince said that his wife Linda sent this fax that was given to him before he got out there. Vince reminded us that Linda is CEO, which he didn’t like and she questioned the testicles of the faction while noting that they cheat all the time. Vince claimed that Linda thinks that Rock, Kane and Undertaker should be competing for the WWF Championship at King of the Ring on Sunday. Vince said that his wife questioned that his grapefruits have shrunk to the size of raisins.
Vince said that if Triple H, Shane or himself win the tag team match at King of the Ring then Triple H will defend the WWF Title in July against the King of the Ring winner. Vince said if however, Kane, Undertaker or Rock defeats anybody on the Hunter, Vince or Shane team then they will become the WWF Champion. Hunter was furious about that. Vince added that Kane, Undertaker and Rock will have to earn this championship provision. All three individuals have to be victorious in their matches: Kane vs. The Hardy Boyz, The Undertaker vs. Bull Buchanan & Big Boss Man (Vince said Bradshaw not Boss Man, but it is Boss Man) and The Rock will face Test & Albert. Vince said just to make sure everything is fair, there will be no interference in any of those matches. Hunter asked Vince if he was out of his mind. Hunter was mad about it. Vince yelled into the microphone asking Linda about the size of his grapefruits now.
Analysis: That was a very informative opening promo. They used Linda once again to make things difficult on the heels by having her set up the idea of the faces getting to challenge for the WWF Championship at King of the Ring in the tag team match. That was a clever way of making the KOTR main event more interesting, but I never liked the idea of putting a singles title on the line in a tag team match. They also set up three big matches for later in the show.

The McMahon office was shown, and Hunter yelled at Vince about his decision making because of what Linda wanted. Vince told him to take care of his end. Vince said if Linda wants fair then Linda is going to get fair.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: X-Pac (w/Tori) vs. Chris Benoit
Pre-match notes: They were both heels. Benoit was also the Intercontinental Title match, but the title was not on the line here.
Benoit with a running shoulder tackle, but X-Pac came back with a spin kick to the face. Benoit with a back body drop. X-Pac tossed Benoit over the top to the floor followed by Benoit kicking him to the floor. Even though both guys were heels, the fans liked Benoit more as X-Pac whipped Benoit into the steel stairs. X-Pac stomped away on Benoit. X-Pac missed a Bronco Buster when Benoit moved, then Benoit came back with a running back elbow and a snap suplex. Tori went on the apron, X-Pac charged for a cheap attack on Benoit, but Chris moved and X-Pac hit Tori by accident. Benoit with a German Suplex for two. Benoit followed up with a Crippler Crossface, but X-Pac got to the ropes. Benoit with a shoulderbreaker. Benoit went up top, jumped off with the headbutt and X-Pac moved out of the way. The Dudley Boyz went down to ringside. Benoit launched X-Pac in the air to counter the X-Factor and when X-Pac hit the mat, Benoit slapped on the Crippler Crossface for the submission win at 4:53.
Winner by submission: Chris Benoit
Analysis: **1/4 It was a solid match although I think they should have booked a clean ending instead of involving the Dudleys. I know the Dudleys had the storyline with X-Pac and Road Dogg, but it just didn’t seem necessary here.
Post match, the Dudleys double teamed X-Pac with punches. Road Dogg ran out for the save, he kicked D-Von in the ribs and gave him a pumphandle slam. X-Pac hit the X-Factor on Bubba. Tori followed up with kicks to the ribs of Bubba and JR called her a “jezebel,” which was a favorite term for JR about heel women. Referees went into the ring to break it up.
Analysis: The Dudleys were selling the dumpster attack from Smackdown, so that’s why DX continued to have the advantage. I believe this may have been Tori’s last time on Raw since she suffered an injury later in the week. I’ll cover that more in the King of the Ring review when that goes up soon.
Eddie Guerrero and Chyna were shown walking backstage with Chyna telling him to take her serious as her opponent.

Vince McMahon was backstage with Road Dogg, X-Pac and Tori saying “in the interest of fairness” (the Linda phrase from earlier) it will be a Handicap Tables Dumpster Match at King of the Ring with Road Dogg, X-Pac and Tori facing the Dudleys.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: Chyna vs. Eddie Guerrero
Pre-match notes: They were both faces. Eddie was the European Champion.
Guerrero gave Chyna flowers, then she put them out of the ring. Guerrero kissed her hand, so she slapped him because she wanted to have a match. Chyna with an arm drag takedown followed by a clothesline. Chyna hit a Powerbomb right near the ropes, so Eddie got his foot on the bottom rope. When Guerrero tried to punch, she teased him that she wanted a kiss and then she hit him with a forearm. Chyna with a handspring elbow against the turnbuckle followed by a press slam. Guerrero with a leapfrog, Chyna teased a low blow punch, but then she stopped and Eddie got on his knees and he was kissing her hand. That’s when Guerrero did a surprising inside cradle for the pinfall win at 2:25.
Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero
Analysis: * Chyna got most of the offense and then Eddie came back with a classic Guerrero style finish. It was more of an angle than a match.
Post match, Chyna walked away looking sad while Guerrero ran up the ramp to go after her.
Edge and Christian were talking backstage about getting in the good graces of the “Facgime” (their name for the McMahon-Helmsley Faction/Regime) and Christian said he had to go meet with somebody from Tiger Beat. Edge was excited about it.

Chyna and Guerrero were in the locker room with Guerrero apologizing to Chyna about beating her in the match. Guerrero tried giving her flowers and candy. She wasn’t having it, but Guerrero gave her a puppy (leading to Lawler screaming about puppies) and she was happy about it, so they were all good.
Edge made his entrance for a King of the Ring match. Chris Jericho entered to a big ovation with a microphone in hand welcoming us to Raw is Jericho. Jericho said for the benefit of those of you with flash photography, Edge is a Hanson-haired bonafide jackass. Jericho called him “Edgeward” and he said that Edge is fitting to be on Tiger Beat magazine because he knows about beating…tiger.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: Chris Jericho vs. Edge
Pre-match notes: Jericho was the face and Edge was the heel. Ten years after this, they wrestled at WrestleMania.
Jericho with a back body drop. Edge to the apron, so Jericho hit a dropkick off the middle ropes. Edge avoided getting whipped into the steps, so Edge hit a Spear on Jericho on the floor. Nice bump. Back in the ring, Edge with a dropkick while Jericho was up against the turnbuckle. Edge with a knee to the ribs, Edge put Jericho on his shoulders and hit a sitout slam. Jericho got a rollup for two. Edge went for an attack off the top, but Jericho came back with a dropkick. Jericho with a running forearm to the face followed by a bulldog for two. Jericho went for a Lionsault, but Edge got the knees up to block leading to a rollup for Edge for two. Jericho with a Powerbomb and Edge countered another attempt into a sunset flip for two. Jericho slapped on the Walls of Jericho submission. Edge tapped out to give Jericho the win at 5:29.
Winner by submission: Chris Jericho
Analysis: **3/4 That was a really good match from my fellow Canadians that ended up as multiple-time World Champions with legendary careers. Jericho getting the win made sense since he was a top singles wrestler while Edge was in a tag team. One year later, Edge won King of the Ring.
Triple H was shown backstage giving a pep talk to Bull Buchanan and Big Boss Man. They told them to get the job done or face the consequences. The Undertaker was shown on his motorcycle and he was up next.

There were members of the NFL’s AFC Champion Tennessee Titans at ringside. Who do they lose to in the Super Bowl? My St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams. Good times.
The Undertaker vs. Bull Buchanan and Big Boss Man
Pre-match notes: The Undertaker was the face while Bull and Boss Man were the heels.
This won’t be a good match. Just a prediction. Bull and Boss Man shoved eachother because they had been arguing. Taker worked over Boss Man with punches, but Boss Man came back with punches of his own. Kane was watching on a TV backstage. Buchanan got the tag, Taker attacked both guys. Taker sent Buchanan into the ring. Buchanan jumped over a back body drop attempt and sent Taker out of the ring. Boss Man got in some cheap shots. Taker came back with punches along with a boot to the face of Buchanan. Boss Man into the ring with a nightstick, Buchanan charged in and Taker hit a Chokeslam for the pinfall win. Boss Man left the match because he had problems with Bull. The match went 3:09.
Winner by pinfall: The Undertaker
Analysis: 1/2* Bad match as expected. Undertaker getting the win was obvious because of the stipulations involving King of the Ring. I had no interest in a Bull and Boss Man in a rivalry because they were boring to watch.
Rikishi walked up to Scotty 2 Hotty and Grandmaster Sexay backstage. Rikishi told Scotty to not take it personally when he has to back that ass up on Scotty in the King of the Ring tournament.

There was a clip from Saturday night in Minneapolis where Governor Jesse Ventura was at ringside at a live event. Jesse said he wasn’t running for President, but if he did his running mate would be Chyna.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: Rikishi vs. Scotty 2 Hotty
Pre-match notes: They were both faces and friends with the same theme music.
Rikishi used his power early with a shoulder tackle. Scotty came back with a superkick for two. Grandmaster Sexay was shown watching on a TV backstage. Rikishi went for a move where he sat on the face, but Scotty moved and ran the ropes leading to a dropkick. Rikishi with a leg drop for two. Rikishi with a clothesline. Scotty went to the turnbuckle, Rikishi charged, he missed and Scotty hit the bulldog. Scotty did the W-O-R-M followed by a chop on his buddy Rikishi for a two count with Rikishi doing a power kickout. Samoan Drop from Rikishi and Rikishi hit a running back splash against the turnbuckle. Rikishi went to the middle rope and he hit the Banzai Drop for the pinfall win at 2:53.
Winner by pinfall: Rikishi
Analysis: *1/2 It was okay for a matchup between allies. There was no Stinkface from Rikishi on his friend, which makes sense that he wouldn’t do that to a buddy. They didn’t call it the Banzai Drop, but that’s the move that Yokozuna used to do. Rikishi was no longer allowed to use the Rikishi Driver finisher because it was too dangerous.
Post match, Rikishi checked on Scotty, but Val Venis went into the ring to attack Rikishi to continue their rivalry. Grandmaster Sexay ran out to make the save, but Venis decked him with a clothesline. Venis went up the ramp as his dance music played.
The Undertaker gave his “brother” Kane a pep talk backstage about how he needs to beat The Hardys and told him to show no mercy. Taker told Kane to pretend like it was Undertaker out there and he’d have no problem.

The Hardy Boyz made their entrance first followed by Kane. As the story goes, Kane had to win just like Undertaker did (and Rock later) if they want the WWF Title on the line at King of the Ring. The Rock was shown
Kane vs. The Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff Hardy)
Pre-match notes: They were all faces.
Kane gave Jeff a hip toss across the ring. Jeff charged, Kane caught him and Kane followed up with a press slam. Undertaker was shown watching backstage. DEAD MAN LOUNGING~!
Matt got the tag with a dropkick to the leg. Kane came back with punches followed by a forearm to the back. Kane missed a corner attack on Matt, Jeff tagged in and hit the Poetry in Motion corner attack. Kane with a boot to the face. Kane with a sidewalk slam on Jeff followed by the clothesline off the top rope, Matt broke up the pin, so Kane punched Matt out of the ring. Jeff with a cross body block to send Kane out of the ring and Matt hit a DDT on the floor on Kane. Jeff tried an attack, Kane caught him and Matt tried an attack. Jeff hit a somersault plancha over the top onto Kane. Matt was set up on the top rope, Kane tried to attack, but the Hardys double teamed and hit a double team leg drop on Kane, who powered out of a pin. Jeff up top and he went for a Swanton Bomb, but Kane sat up to escape. Kane with a powerslam on Matt for two with Jeff breaking up the pin. A double team attack missed, then Jeff went up top and missed a corkscrew attack off the top, which led to Jeff crashing hard into the mat. Ouch. It was a slip from Jeff. Kane with a Chokeslam on Matt and Jeff collapsed to the mat, so that was it as Kane pinned Matt at 6:20.
Winner by pinfall: Kane
Analysis: **1/2 Good match and it went longer than I expected going into it. The last few minutes were really well done with some exciting action. Kane worked hard. There were a few scary moments like when Jeff landed on the back of his head, but they managed to have a competitive match. The outcome was never in doubt because of the stipulation announced earlier in the show.

It was back to the McMahon office with Hunter complaining to Vince about two wins and said if Rock wins, Hunter is warning Vince. Vince told him it’s not Hunter’s WWF Title, it is “their” title.

Hunter was back in the office with Stephanie complaining about how “daddy” Vince is screwing things up.
Crash Holly made his entrance so they showed highlights from Smackdown when Samuel Jackson was on as Shaft, who protected Crash from Brisco and Patterson.
King of the Ring Second Round Match: Hardcore Holly vs. Crash Holly
Pre-match notes: They were storyline cousins. Hardcore was a heel and Crash was more of a face that was the Hardcore Champion.
Crash with a body slam to start. Crash up top with a cross body block followed by a rollup for two. Hardcore countered a move into a Powerbomb for two. Hardcore with a clothesline that was good for two. There was a mild “Elroy” chant for Crash as Hardcore connected with two chops to the chest followed by a running back elbow. Hardcore dumped Crash out of the ring, some chops followed and it was back in the ring. Hardcore with a backbreaker. JR put over Hardcore having a good match on Heat with Triple H, which I don’t recall. Main eventers like Triple H weren’t wrestling on Heat that often by the mid-2000s. Hardcore with a vertical suplex followed by a dropkick. Patterson and Brisco went down to the ring with a referee. Patterson had a club in his hand, Hardcore left the ring to go after him, so Brisco went into the ring with a 2×4 piece of wood and hit Crash in the back with it. DQ win for Crash at 4:14.
Winner by disqualification: Crash Holly
Analysis: * Boring match with a lame finish to continue the hardcore feud between Crash and Brisco. Hardcore Holly looked like a fool getting distracted so easily.
Post match, Hardcore was in the ring and he was mad about what happened. Patterson tried attacking Hardcore from behind, but Hardcore fought back with punches. Brisco hit Crash with the 2×4 again and referee Mike Chioda went into the ring to count the pinfall as Brisco won the Hardcore Title again.
Winner and New Hardcore Champion: Gerald Brisco
Brisco celebrated with the Hardcore Championship as “Real American” played (Hulk Hogan’s theme song) with JR complaining about now we have to listen to that “hideous music.” That’s funny. Hardcore punched Crash in the face just because he was mad about the result.
Analysis: The Brisco/Crash rivalry led to several title changes for the comedy Hardcore Title.

There was a shot of Brisco and Patterson backstage with referee Mike Chioda. They told Mike to lock the door. Patterson poured some champagne for Brisco, Chioda and himself. Brisco said he loved his buddy Patterson and Patterson poured champagne on Gerald’s head. Patterson hit Brisco in the head with another champagne bottle. Patterson covered Brisco to win the Hardcore Title.
Winner and New Hardcore Champion: Pat Patterson
Analysis: I am dreading the thought of having to rewatch the Patterson/Brisco match at King of the Ring 2000. Seeing it the first time 19 years ago was bad enough. One of the dumbest matches ever. I will cover it in my KOTR 2000 review soon.
There was a shot of the locker room with Triple H and Stephanie trying to give a pep talk to Test, Albert and Trish Stratus. Steph said that they need to take out The Rock, Test said “whatever Steph” and Triple H shoved Test. Hunter told them to get the job done.
Analysis: I like how even though Test was a heel like Steph, he still hated her for the failed relationship from late 1999. The drugged out Vegas wedding angle…I’m sure that’s a fun one for Triple H’s kids to hear about.
The Rock was interviewed by Michael Cole. He said he’s not going to win for Kane or The Undertaker. He said he’s going to do what he does best because he is the People’s Champion. Rock said that the letters “T” and “A” stand in his way. He said he’s not like Test or Albert (he said he had a pierced anus), but Rock is “Grade A bring your candy asses” and the fans chanted “Rocky” for him. If ya smell…ended it.

Test and Albert entered with my favorite Trish Stratus for the main event.
The Rock entered the arena and got a massive ovation from the crowd as usual. I say it all the time, but it feels louder every week I watch these shows. The story was that Rock had to win this match in order to set up the WWF Title match at King of the Ring in the six-man tag team match.
The Rock vs. Test and Albert (w/Trish Stratus)
Pre-match notes: The Rock was the face while T&A were heels.
Rock tossed Albert out of the ring and then he gave a back body drop to Test to send him over the top to the floor. Rock sent Albert into the announce table as JR did his usual thing by mentioning Albert’s head size. Test came back with a clothesline while outside the ring. Back in the ring, Albert with a clothesline and Test with a boot to the face of Rock. Albert tagged in with a sidewalk slam followed by a back elbow. Test put Rock’s head against the middle ropes, so Trish choked Rock against the ropes. Lucky guy. Rock tried to fight back, but Test punched Rock. Trish grabbed Rock’s leg after a whip into the ropes and Rock hit a neckbreaker on Test. Trish went on the apron, the referee was distracted and Rock hit a DDT on Test. Albert grabbed the ring bell and he hit Rock in the head with it. Test covered Rock for just two because Rock got a shoulder up. Rock hit a Rock Bottom on Test. Albert went into the ring leading to a double clothesline leading to Rock and Albert crashing into the mat as fans chanted “Rocky” in support of Rock. Rock worked over Test and Albert with punches, Rock with a clothesline on Albert to send him out of the ring and Rock hit a spinebuster on Test. Rock with a People’s Elbow on Test for the pinfall win at 6:05.
Winner by pinfall: The Rock
Analysis: ** The match was okay, but it was hurt by the fact that the result of the match was so obvious. There wasn’t a lot of drama when T&A were getting those nearfalls. I always liked the Rock Bottom as a finish better than the People’s Elbow, but you can’t question the popularity of the People’s Elbow. That’s why he used it as a finisher sometimes.
The win by The Rock meant that Triple H’s WWF Title was on the line in the six-man tag team match at King of the Ring.
It was back to the McMahon locker room where Triple H was furious. Triple H asked if the WWF Title meant anything to him. Vince said wait for Smackdown on Thursday and Shane led Vince out of the room.
The Rock posted on the ropes as the winner of the match. That was the end of Raw.
This episode of Raw had a runtime of 1:31:53 on WWE Network. That is five minutes shorter than the previous week.

Final Thoughts
This Raw episode gets a 6.5 out of 10.
It was a fun episode of Raw with the handicap and King of the Ring matches dominating this show. Three handicap matches in one night were too much, but they must have felt they needed to go that route in order to set up the King of the Ring WWF Title tag team match.
There was a lot of very good in-ring action throughout the night, especially in the first half. It is different from today’s WWE where we get longer matches more often. When these wrestlers get between 5-7 minutes, it’s usually pretty solid.
The big thing to come out of this Raw was that the WWF Title was going to be on the line in six-man tag team match at King of the Ring 2000. That was not a common thing, so I think fans were intrigued to see how it would play out. Did I like the WWF Title being on the line in a tag team match? Not really, but at least it was different.
