The John Report: WWE Smackdown 07/09/21 Review

Welcome to this week’s WWE Smackdown review. It’s the last Smackdown episode at the ThunderDome in Tampa with next week’s show set to take place in Houston. While the ThunderDome was definitely an improvement over the WWE Performance Center shows, I think we can all agree that going back on the road being in front of live fans is the best thing for any wrestling company. The Money in the Bank PPV is coming up on Sunday, July 18 and we know most of the lineup by now.

Sadly, there is some major injury news to report because we found out that Bayley suffered a torn ACL in her left knee that will put her on the shelf for about nine months. Apparently, the injury happened while she was training at the WWE Performance Center because WWE wanted their wrestlers to do some training before the live events ramp up again. I’m sure some fans might be mad at WWE for wanting to do that and that Bayley got hurt during training, but any athlete can be hurt at any time. It’s no different than a basketball player getting hurt at practice or a football player tearing a knee during a drill or any other sport. Bayley has been one of the most durable wrestlers in WWE in recent years and definitely one of the best performers in these last 16 months or so in the “pandemic era.” She will be missed. Maybe she’ll be on TV even when she’s hurt because she can host her talk show or do commentary or something like that. Anyway, I’ll miss her in the ring and I guess we can guess she might be ready for WrestleMania next year. Best wishes to her. Bayley’s injury means that Bianca Belair needs a new opponent at Money in the Bank, so we’ll find that out during Smackdown. Here’s a video message from Bayley with her left knee in a brace doing a heel promo blaming the fans for it.

Let’s get to it.

There was a backstage scene with Paul Heyman talking to Jimmy Uso outside of the private dressing room of Roman Reigns. Heyman told Jimmy not to go in the room now and assured Jimmy he’ll get Roman’s full attention tonight. Jimmy left while Heyman had a smirk on his face.

Analysis: Jimmy Uso had a DUI earlier this week and they put him in the first segment of the show. It was the third DUI for Jimmy in ten years although his 2019 DUI was ruled not guilty in court. I truly hope that man doesn’t drive after drinking ever again. I don’t know if he’s learned his lesson or if he’s going to get treatment. I just hope Jimmy doesn’t make the same mistake ever again because somebody could get hurt. Please don’t drink and drive. Get somebody else to drive, call a cab, use Uber or Lyft or something else.

The Smackdown introduction video aired.

Roman Reigns was shown behind the curtain with the Universal Title. Paul Heyman walked up to the champion as they made their entrance. The announce team of Michael Cole and Pat McAfee welcomed us to the last Smackdown in the Thunderdome.

Let’s Hear from Roman Reigns

Reigns entered the week as we sit over a week away from Money in the Bank on July 18 when Roman defends the Universal Title against Edge. The two Money in the Bank briefcases were above the ring as Reigns held up the Universal Title. Reigns was greeted by boos along with “Roman sucks” chants as Heyman held up the Universal Title.

Reigns said that a lot of you at home didn’t like the fact that Roman wasn’t present last week. Reigns said that there’s a lot about last week that he didn’t like. Reigns said he can’t stand for a liar like Edge saying that Roman fears him and Edge is in Roman’s head. Roman said he’s an honest man. Reigns said that in their main event at WrestleMania, for maybe like one moment (ask Brock he said to Paul), he said for maybe 10 or 20 seconds, there might have been a little fear. Reigns said that propelled him, he picked himself up, then he smashed ‘em, he stacked ‘em and he pinned ‘em and they printed a shirt because of this. Reigns said that it’s not possible for Edge to fear him. Reign said he wasn’t focused a few weeks ago because he was thinking about Jimmy and Jey. Reigns said that Edge wasn’t a thought or worry in his mind. Reigns said since they are talking about family, it’s a good point to handle some business. Reigns looked up the aisle.

Jimmy Uso showed up wearing plain black clothes. Jimmy said he got in Edge’s face last week for them just like Roman said. Jimmy said he didn’t see Roman last week since he must be on vacation. Roman told Jey not to make decisions for them. Roman said if anybody earned a vacation he earned a vacation, but he doesn’t take vacations. Roman said he was busy doing Jimmy’s job too. Here comes Jey Uso making his return after about three weeks, which would suggest that Roman got Jey to come back after Jimmy failed to do it.

Jey said he is not back for any of them, but for ALL of them. Jey said that Roman’s right-hand man is back. Jey told Jimmy he always has his back even through these hard times right now, keep your head up and do what we do by becoming a seven-time WWE Tag Team Champion. Jimmy hugged Jey. Roman said he’s been saying it all along – that’s all he ever wanted. Reigns said that he’s been saying it seven-time Tag Team Champions and Universal Champion for however long he wants to be and the way they do it is together, on the same page – all of them working together. Roman said that nobody can touch them if they do it his way. Reigns extended his arms and hugged both Usos at the same time. Roman’s music played to end it.

Analysis: The family is fully united with no more of the conflict that has been going on for the last few months. I don’t know if Jimmy Uso is going to face any punishment for his DUI earlier in the week, but it appears as though he’s going to remain on television for the foreseeable future. I’m looking forward to seeing Roman working with The Usos as a cohesive unit that can dominate the Smackdown brand in the months ahead. That will make for good television.

Baron Corbin was shown backstage with some hair on his head and a disheveled beard. Kayla Braxton showed up to interview him. Corbin talked about going through tough times. Corbin said that he’s won Money in the Bank in the past and if he can win it again he’ll get his life back on track.

Baron Corbin made his entrance to no music.

(Commercial)

Big E made his entrance to join commentary for this match. Big E was wearing a Bayley “Ding Dong Hello” shirt to support Bayley, who is out with a knee injury. Big E is already in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

They showed a video about Baron Corbin having a tough time over the last three weeks after he lost the king’s crown to King Nakamura. Corbin has been going through a tough time since then.

Big E had a couch and fridge for commentary and he invited Pat McAfee to sit with him. King Nakamura and Rick Boogs were shown driving in Corbin’s white Mercedes that was towed last week.

King Nakamura made his entrance with Rick Boogs playing the electric guitar. McAfee and Big E were dancing at ringside while putting their foot in some food pedicure massages that were by their feet. Corbin went after Nakamura, but then Boogs sent Corbin into the barricade. That led to a break.

(Commercial)

Money in the Bank Contract Ladder Match Qualifying Match: King Shinsuke Nakamura (w/Rick Boogs) vs. Baron Corbin

Nakamura went for a move off the ropes, Corbin caught him and Corbin slammed Nakamura’s ribs into the knee. Corbin with a knee to the ribs. Corbin suplexed Nakamura ribs first across the top rope. Big E said that he’s been in WWE for nine years and not one World Title match or opportunity, so this is his shot. Corbin worked over Nakamura with punches and then Nakamura ran the ropes leading to a jumping kick to the chest. Nakamura with a kick to the head, then a jumping forearm and a running knee by the turnbuckle. Nakamura with a knee to the back and a sliding knee to the face for two. Nakamura charged at Corbin, who avoided it and applied a half crab submission, but Nakamura got to the ropes. Corbin connected with a German Suplex for a two count. Nakamura with elbows and a jumping kick that sent Corbin out of the ring. Corbin punched Boogs with a punch to the face. Corbin suplexed Nakamura across the announce table (the table did not break) and that led to a commercial about five minutes into the match.

(Commercial)

Corbin was aggressive with punches, a whip into the corner, Nakamura moved and Corbin went shoulder first into the turnbuckle. Nakamura came back with a spin kick. Nakamura charged right into the Deep Six slam that leads to a two count when he does that move. Corbin with a suplex from the apron into the ring for a two count. Nakamura put his hands around the head/neck of Corbin into a triangle choke, Corbin with a Powerbomb, but Nakamura was able to hold on until Corbin’s leg was under the bottom rope leading to a break. Nakamura charged at Corbin, who came back with a clothesline and Nakamura did a flip bump. Nakamura with short kicks to the chest followed by the Kinshasa knee strike for the pinfall win after 12 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: King Nakamura

The win by Nakamura means he joins the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match with Ricochet, John Morrison, Riddle, Big E, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens and either Seth Rollins or Cesaro

Analysis: *** Good match that was better than some of their other matches in the last two months. It also was longer than some of those matches, but with that said I’d be happy without seeing this match for a while. Nakamura looked good selling Corbin’s offense throughout the match until Nakamura finished off Corbin with the Kinshasa. I think the right man won here.

Jimmy and Jey Uso were in the dressing room. Jimmy apologized for what he said to him in the past. Jey said that it’s okay because they’re brothers that have always fought, but then they make up and all is good. Jey said that a guy like Edge can bring them all together (since they don’t like him). Jey wondered if they should try to handle some business before Roman has to and Jey told Jimmy to think about it.

Natalya and Tamina made their entrance for a match.

(Commercial)

Natalya and Tamina were in the ring doing a promo saying they have a match against two women that have never been on Smackdown before and they want to face the Women’s Tag Team Champions. Tamina told them to get out there so they can get over with this.

It was Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox showing up in Shotzi’s tank. They are from NXT and they are making their Smackdown debut. The graphic just said they are Shotzi & Nox.

Analysis: There is an obvious lack of women on Smackdown, so I’m happy for Shotzi and Nox getting the call to be on Smackdown. Shotzi was teaming with Ember Moon for most of this year while Nox just returned from another major knee injury. Both women are very talented.

Natalya & Tamina vs. Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox

This is not for the Women’s Tag Team Titles. Shotzi and Nox did a nice double team move early on with Shotzi holding Natalya while Nox hit a running dropkick. Nox with a running back splash on Natalya and then Nox tossed Shotzi onto Natalya against the turnbuckle. Natalya broke free, Tamina got a tag and kicked Shotzi in the head for a two count. Tamina with a corner clothesline followed by an elbow drop for two. The match broke down a bit with all four women in the ring with Nox hitting a corner splash on Tamina, Natalya with a spinning clothesline on Nox and Shotzi hit Natalya with a clothesline. Shotzi went up top and hit the Ballpit (senton splash) off the top on Natalya for the pinfall win. It went about four minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox

Analysis: ** Good for Shotzi & Tegan making a strong impression for their debut. I don’t like champions losing non-title matches, but this is one of those rare cases where it is fine because you want to see the new stars getting a win. I thought Natalya and Tamina could have got more offense here to make the newcomers make the comeback. It was okay overall, but I would have liked to see them get more time.

Edge was interviewed by Megan Morant. Edge said he was going to call out Roman Reigns and he wondered if Reigns would come out alone or with his family (Dumb & Dumber). Edge said that this family reunion isn’t going to be a happy one and that’s not a prediction, that’s a spoiler.

Sonya Deville, the WWE Official, made her entrance for an announcement.

(Commercial)

Smackdown Women’s Championship Announcement

Sonya Deville was in the ring saying that Bayley suffered an injury yesterday during a training session and she will miss about nine months. Bayley will not be wrestling at Money in the Bank. Deville cued up a video of Bayley sharing a message. Bayley was on a couch with her left leg on a couch and there was a big brace on the left knee. Bayley claimed that we (the fans) didn’t care that she was hurt and she blamed the fans. Bayley said she didn’t care who they put in her place because they are not as good as her.

Sonya said that Bianca will no longer defend the Smackdown Women’s Championship at Money in the Bank. Instead, she’ll defend that title next week on Smackdown and her opponent will be Carmella.

Carmella made her entrance wearing a red outfit that was not wrestling gear. Carmella said in addition to being a two-time Money in the Bank winner and the next Smackdown Women’s Champion, she is also the most beautiful woman in WWE.

Liv Morgan showed up complaining saying that she didn’t understand. Liv complained about Carmella as the next title contender. Morgan said she’ll slap that pretty smile off Carmella’s face again. Morgan complained to Sonya about how many times she has to beat Carmella. Sonya cut off Liv and said that Liv is replacing Carmella in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match and told Morgan to get out of her face. Morgan walked over to Carmella and said she hopes Carmella wins the Smackdown Women’s Championship because when Liv wins the title, she is going to cash in on Carmella.

Bianca Belair showed up with the Smackdown Women’s Title while Liv pointed at the Money in the Bank briefcases as if it was the WrestleMania sign. Belair said she respected Bayley’s competitive skills and she looks forward to finishing this up when Bayley comes back. Belair said to Carmella: “I’ll see you next week.” That’s it. Carmella and Belair exchanged words to end it.

Analysis: I’m a bit surprised that they would take the Smackdown Women’s Title match off the Money in the Bank PPV, but at least they are doing the title match next week on Smackdown. It’s likely a case of WWE feeling that there won’t be much of a story if they did it on PPV, so they might as well do it on TV next week. As for Liv Morgan, it’s great that she is in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. I think Liv would be a popular choice as the winner.

Roman Reigns was shown in the dressing room with Paul Heyman informing Reigns that Edge intends to call him out tonight. Heyman said that Edge questioned Roman’s manhood as well. Reigns looked angry.

Seth Rollins made his entrance for the second Money in the Bank qualifying match of the night.

(Commercial)

There was a video about Toni Storm coming soon to Smackdown. That’s long overdue. She’s awesome.

Kevin Owens was on commentary for this match because he’s in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Cesaro made his entrance as Seth’s opponent.

Money in the Bank Contract Ladder Match Qualifying Match: Seth Rollins vs. Cesaro

They battled over some headlocks early on and then Cesaro hit an impressive backbreaker. Cesaro knocked Rollins off the turnbuckle followed by a cross body block on Rollins for a two count. Rollins threw a bit of a temper tantrum at ringside leading to a break two minutes into the match.

(Commercial)

Rollins got a boot to the face of Cesaro, but Cesaro came back with a clothesline over the top to the floor. Cesaro left the ring with Rollins sending Cesaro into the announce table. Rollins whipped Cesaro into the steel steps. Rollins with a snapmare into a knee drop for two. Rollins with two running knees to the ribs and an armdrag that sent Cesaro into the mat. Owens said if he wins the contract then he has issues with Roman Reigns and he had a history with Bobby Lashley too. Owens said that contract means the world for everybody involved. They battled over a backslide, Rollins jumped over Cesaro and then Rollins hit a back kick to the head for two. Cesaro came back with uppercuts, then running forearms against the turnbuckle and Cesaro did a lifting slam over his shoulders for a two count. Cesaro went up top, Rollins jumped up to the top and Rollins delivered a superplex. Cesaro powered Rollins up leading to a suplex spot over the top to the floor! Rough landing for both guys. The show went to break.

(Commercial)

The show returned with Cesaro ending the swing as McAfee counted to twelve, so we missed it. Rollins to the ropes, then back in the ring and Cesaro hit an uppercut for two. Rollins got to the ropes to avoid a Sharpshooter and then Rollins took the turnbuckle pad off while he did that. Cesaro got a two count after a slam out of the corner. Rollins with a back drop, Cesaro landed on his feet, Cesaro went for a corkscrew uppercut and Rollins crushed Cesaro with a forearm to the side of the head. Rollins charged, Cesaro caught him and Rollins did a hurricanrana into the exposed steel for two. Rollins went for a pin using the ropes for two. Rollins with a forearm to the back of the neck for two. Cesaro was busted open in the forehead after he hit the steel turnbuckle unless it was caused by something else. Rollins whipped Cesaro into the barricade and into the announce table. Cesaro was back in before the ten count. Rollins with another forearm to the back of the head that sent Rollins out of the ring to the floor. Rollins hit Cesaro with a DDT on the bottom of the steel ramp. Cesaro crawled back into the ring before the ten count. Rollins went for The Stomp, Cesaro avoided it and got a rollup. Cesaro hit an uppercut, but he was dazed and Rollins hit The Stomp for the pinfall win after 19 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Seth Rollins

Analysis: ***3/4 This was an excellent match between two of the best guys on Smackdown that have wrestled a lot. They got plenty of time and I really liked the story they told. Cesaro getting a bloody forehead was not planned because we know that WWE is against blade jobs in this era, but the steel was exposed and Cesaro hit it in a place that cut him open. The blood helped the story of the match because Cesaro was dazed after that, so after Rollins hit that DDT on the steel ramp, it looked devastating and Cesaro sold it so well. The finish was clever because even though Cesaro did an uppercut, he was dazed after the blood loss and Rollins was able to finish him off right after that. I thought the finish made sense. I would have liked to see Cesaro in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but I have no complaints about Rollins winning because he’s awesome too.

The victory means that Seth Rollins has qualified for the Men’s Money in the Bank Contract Ladder Match. The eight-man lineup for Money in the Bank looks like this: Ricochet, John Morrison, Riddle, Drew McIntyre, Big E, Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura and Seth Rollins.

Analysis: It’s a strong field. I like everybody in the match. My hope is Big E or Riddle wins, but I honestly like everybody involved, so there’s not a bad choice in my opinion.

The Usos were shown walking down a hallway. Jimmy wanted to knock on Edge’s locker room door. Jey stopped Jimmy and told him to let Edge come out first and then they can get him.

This Monday on Raw: Naomi vs. Asuka vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Nikki Ash. Bobby Lashley faces Xavier Woods as well.

(Commercial)

The Usos were outside of Edge’s locker room. Jimmy was tired of waiting, so they went into the room and Edge wasn’t even there.

Seth Rollins was celebrating in the hallway as he hugged Kayla Braxton, who showed up for an interview. Rollins said he knew that Zazarow (Cesaro) didn’t stand a chance against somebody like Rollins. Seth said that Cesaro is just not on his level. Seth said that he is the present and future Money in the Bank. Seth said that the last time he won Money in the Bank, he cashed in on the “Tribal Chief, Head of the Table” Universal Champion Roman Reigns (WrestleMania 31 when Brock Lesnar was WWE Champion, but Seth did pin Reigns). Seth said that he waited for the perfect opportunity to ash in and maybe this time he didn’t want to wait. Seth said that this time he might cash in at Money in the Bank. Rollins complained about how he should be going for the Universal Title at Money in the Bank. That led to Edge showing up behind Rollins. Edge said that Rollins will bitch about not getting a title shot while Edge takes the shot and now he’s going to do something that Seth won’t do and that’s call Roman out.

Analysis: There’s the tease of Rollins vs. Edge, which is one of the rumored top matches at SummerSlam next month. That’s going to feel fresh and it should be an outstanding matchup.

There was a Progressive Match Flo replay showing the destruction caused by Otis recently in defeating Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins in an impressive fashion.

Chad Gable and Otis were backstage for a promo saying that it doesn’t matter if you’re Montez Ford, Angelo Dawkins, Big E, Edge or even Roman Reigns. Chad said that if you step up to the Alpha Academy, the result is the same. Otis said: “I will destroy anyone.” That was it.

Edge made his entrance for the main event promo time.

(Commercial)

Next Friday on Smackdown in Houston: Bianca Belair defends the Smackdown Women’s Title vs. Carmella. Also, it’s Big E vs. Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins vs. King Nakamura.

Edge and Roman Reigns Confrontation

Edge said that he didn’t care about how many minions that Roman Reigns has or how many people he has brainwashed. Edge said that at Money in the Bank, he’ll take the Universal Championship and anybody that gets in the way will look like this. They showed images of Edge using a piece of a steel chair to choke out Roman Reigns (at WrestleMania) and Jimmy Uso (from last week). Roman and his family were shown watching on a TV backstage. Edge said that he was calling out Roman and wondered where he was at. Reigns got up out of the chair he was sitting in. Roman told The Usos to stay there and said that he’s going to handle this on his own. Roman walked away with the Universal Championship and Paul Heyman joining him.

Reigns and Heyman were shown walking in the Gorilla Position area backstage. Reigns handed Heyman the Universal Title.

Reigns made his entrance to answer Edge calling him out for a confrontation. The Usos were shown watching on a TV backstage saying something feels wrong here. The Usos left even though Roman told them to stay in the back. When The Usos music hit, Roman was not happy about it. Roman reminded them that Edge called him out one on one and Roman said he is going to handle this.

Edge backed away to allow Reigns to step into the ring and then they had a staredown. They got into a slugfest with Edge punching Reigns into the corner. The Mysterios music hit as Rey and Dominik (the Smackdown Tag Team Champions) hit The Usos in the back with steel chairs. Rey and Dominik hit The Usos off the apron to the floor. Jimmy hit a superkick on Dominik, but Rey hit Jimmy with a chair to the ribs. Jey with a superkick on Rey. Edge hit an Edgecution DDT on Reigns. Edge set up for a Spear, but Jey held Edge’s leg and Jimmy hit a superkick on Edge. Rey and Dominik got back into it with Dominik hitting a 619 kick on both Usos. Edge hit a Spear on Jey.

Edge grabbed a steel chair at ringside while Rey held Jey down in the ring. Edge kicked off the bottom of the steel chair and Edge choked Jey with the steel bar just like he did to Roman and Jimmy in the past. Edge pulled back on the steel that was in Jey’s mouth with Jey selling it with his eyes wide open until Jey eventually passed out from it. They showed replays of what happened.

Edge choked Jey with the steel bar again while the Mysterios held down Jimmy. Edge went over to Jimmy and choked him with the steel bar. Edge choked Jey with the steel bar again. Reigns was watching all this from the ramp and Reigns went to the back. Edge stared towards Reigns to end the show.

Analysis: This was a really good segment. No surprise there considering the participants. Edge brought the intensity. Reigns didn’t want The Usos to help him, but he needed them and The Usos were right to expect something fishy. The Mysterios coming back to help Edge made sense since Reigns is the one that took them and that sets up the obvious Mysterios/Usos feud that should be outstanding. Let’s just hope Jimmy gets his mind right and doesn’t make any more mistakes behind the wheel of a car because this is the kind of storyline that is ready to catch fire. I think WWE can definitely build up to Mysterios vs. Usos as a Tag Team Title Match at SummerSlam next month although putting a title on Jimmy sends a wrong message after the guy got a DUI earlier this week. Anyway, we’ll see what happens there if WWE goes down that road.

What this segment also did was set up a huge six-man tag team match with Edge teaming with the Mysterios against Roman and The Usos if they want to do that. There’s a lot of history between Edge & Rey Mysterio as allies (and foes too). My favorite WWE Tag Team Match ever is Edge & Rey vs. Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit at No Mercy 2002. It’s a special one, kids. Anyway, I really like how all of this was done.

Three Stars of the Show

  1. Bayley – We will miss her for the next nine months due to injury. She has earned this spot as one of the MVPs during the Thunderdome era.
  2. Seth Rollins/Cesaro
  3. Edge/Roman Reigns

The Scoreboard

7.25 out of 10

Last week: 7.25

2021 Average: 7.04

Final Thoughts

I thought it was a very good Smackdown overall with a nice mix of entertaining matches and good promos/segments. The Seth Rollins win over Cesaro was the best match while King Nakamura and Baron Corbin had a better match than they have had in the past. Rollins and Nakamura are in Money in the Bank now. All of the segments with Roman Reigns, Edge and The Usos were good as it built up to a show ending confrontation with The Mysterios coming back to help Edge. The build for Reigns vs. Edge has been terrific while there was also a backstage tease for Rollins vs. Edge, which is rumored/expected for SummerSlam.

It was a newsworthy night for the women’s division with Carmella getting a Smackdown Women’s Title match against Bianca Belair now that Bayley is out injured, but it’s on Smackdown rather than Money in the Bank. Liv Morgan was given her well-deserved spot in the Money in the Bank. The team of Shotzi & Nox got a win in their Smackdown debut while Toni Storm is heading to Smackdown soon, which is great. Smackdown was definitely lacking in terms of women’s wrestlers, so I like the additions from NXT. Yes, it hurts NXT a bit, but NXT has way more women as well.

This was the last Smackdown of the Thunderdome era. I’m ready for the live crowds to return in one week and I’m sure the wrestlers are even more excited than we are. Bring it on.
