WWE Could Be Worried About Top Star Facing A Similar Issue As Roman Reigns, Says Veteran
Around a decade ago, WWE faced major issues while trying to push Roman Reigns.
In Unreal Season 3, it was revealed that WWE had planned to push Bron Breakker and make him the Royal Rumble winner this year, but they pivoted in another direction because they believed pushing him too soon and too hard could lead to fan backlash.
On a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, veteran Matt Hardy shared his thoughts on the matter, saying that WWE shouldn’t be afraid of fan backlash, and if the company truly sees Bron Breakker’s potential and believes in him, Triple H and co. should commit to pushing him.
Hardy praised Breakker’s physical ability but admitted that he doesn’t know enough about his promo skills or mindset to judge those aspects.
He disagreed with WWE slowing down Breakker’s push because of concerns over potential fan backlash, saying the company can always change course if the push doesn’t work and should be willing to take risks instead of playing it safe.
“The most vocal critics are the most diehard that are online, and that’s probably the people they were trying to avoid, being hateful of Bron Breakker getting too much too soon or whatever. There are times where you just, if you have a guy you want to build, f*ck it, you got to build a guy. Not everybody’s going to like it. Not everybody’s going to like it.”
“I do think Bron Breakker is talented enough, and because he’s an athletic freak, that he could carry his own weight there. I have no idea how he is as far as promos or mentally how he thinks. I don’t know how he processes stuff, how he puts stuff together. But physically, he’s incredible. He’s an incredible specimen. So physically, he is ready for that role, to be in that spot.”
WWE Feared Fans Rejecting Bron Breakker’s Push Like They Did With Roman Reigns
Hardy then compared Breakker’s situation to Roman Reigns’ push a decade ago, noting that WWE may be hesitant because of the backlash Reigns received back then. However, he believes that history shouldn’t stop WWE from moving forward with Breakker.
“He was definitely a Vince guy. He had the look of a Greek god, the chiseled, handsome guy, super athletic, just an amazing, unique look, and just cool as s*it in real life too. He was that guy. They’re like, all right, let’s put the rocket on this guy and let’s move him to the top. That history, he said, is probably what made WWE hesitate.
“I can see where some of those fears of what happened with Roman could run a parallel and almost be a reason for them trying to pull back on Bron Breakker. But sometimes you just got to push forward. You’re never going to get 100 percent of any crowd to support everything you do.”
