WWE Planning Blockbuster First Time Ever Singles Match At SummerSlam
A huge match between former WWE Champions is likely going to happen at SummerSlam.
There’s a hot rivalry brewing on WWE SmackDown in the women’s division, but neither wrestler is holding a title right now.
The 14-time WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte Flair, and former Women’s Champion, Jade Cargill, have been having issues for several weeks. Since Flair has become an ally of Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, she has gotten involved with Cargill on several occasions.
It is clear that WWE is building towards a big match between Flair and Cargill, and now there are more details on when it might happen.
WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select reports that a “match between Jade Cargill and Charlotte Flair has been pitched internally for SummerSlam” and was penciled in for the event at one point. The report added that the company was hoping to do the first-ever Flair/Cargill match at a big event, so SummerSlam is clearly the right time for it.
As always in WWE, plans can change, but it seems like Flair and Cargill are on a collision course for the 2-night SummerSlam event on August 1 & 2 that will likely feature more than 12 matches over the two nights.
In the ongoing Queen of the Ring tournament, Flair and Cargill are in the same match on the June 12th edition of SmackDown. That match will be Sol Ruca vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill, and the winner will move on to the semifinals to face Liv Morgan.
On the June 5th edition of WWE SmackDown, Jade Cargill teamed up with Michin to beat Flair and Tiffany Stratton. Cargill actually pinned Stratton in the match, which could lead to Cargill going after Stratton’s Women’s US Title. Cargill has previously beaten Stratton for the Women’s Title, so there’s a history there.
Jade Cargill Wants Next WWE Women’s Title Reign To Be Different
At WrestleMania 42, Jade Cargill lost the WWE Women’s Title to Rhea Ripley. Cargill has gotten a rematch but failed to win the title back, so Cargill is likely focusing on other things, such as her rivalry with Flair.
In a recent interview, Cargill admitted frustration with her booking as champion because she wanted a more memorable title reign, given that she held the gold for 169 days. During her title reign, Cargill faced criticism from fans for not defending the title more often. That’s obviously not up to her, because it’s the creative team’s job to book a champion for matches.
During another interview talking about her title reign, Jade Cargill then labeled her only WWE Women’s Championship reign a “practice run” and suggested it would be different next time.
“I wanted to wrestle more. I wanted more competitive matches. I wanted more grit. I really wanted to sink my teeth into whatever was being thrown at me. That’s all I wanted with my reign, but we didn’t get that as much as I wanted, and that’s fine.
But now that I had a practice run, I’m gonna call it a practice run, I’m gonna say next time is gonna be totally different.”
During her WWE run so far, Cargill has also held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles with Bianca Belair as well. They had two reigns as the champions.
