This WWE star, who claims to be John Cena’s brother, recently spoke about his own character.

R-Truth is a WWE veteran. He has been in the wrestling business since the 1990s and is currently one-half of the WWE Tag Team Champions along with Damian Priest. He has a comedy gimmick, and he mostly plays a confused character for comic effect.

Truth was released by WWE mid-last year but reinstated almost immediately, following internet backlash from Truth’s hardcore fanbase, which chanted “we want truth” as loudly as they could.

The saga was explained and showcased in detail in WWE’s Netflix docuseries Unreal. Another major moment in Truth’s career came when he briefly turned heel by shaving off his hair and declaring himself as a more dangerous Ron Killings (his real name). But the creative team later turned him back into a comic babyface and shelved the idea entirely.

Speaking to Undertaker on his Six-Feet Under podcast, Truth revealed why it’s hard for him to be a heel.

WWE Star R-Truth Says Fans Know His Real Self Too Well To Buy Him As A Heel

Despite fans liking the idea of Truth’s heel turn, R-Truth himself says they may have a hard time buying him as a heel because of how nice a person he is in real life.

I think because people know who I am outside of wrestling too. Like, I can’t really be a bad guy. I try to be positive with everybody. Even if I’m going through something myself, I don’t want to put that on people. I know what it feels like to not have positivity around you, so if somebody sees me, I want them to leave happier than when they saw me. That’s just genuinely who I am.

He then talked about the massive reaction he got during his WWE contract situation and temporary release last year.

You don’t get that kind of reaction unless you’ve treated people the right way for years. Talent, crew guys, production people, the fans — they all rallied behind you because they know who you are.

Man, hearing that… there’s really no words for it. My son was standing behind me when all that happened, and he told me, ‘Dad, it was worth it.’ And that hit me hard because of all the stuff you miss in this business — birthdays, anniversaries, funerals, family time — all that sacrifice. To hear that from him… it meant everything.

Booker T recently defended R-Truth on the No Contest Wrestling podcast, saying that those who make negative comments about R-Truth say more about them than Truth himself.

Look at R-Truth—sometimes when I hear people nag or say something negative about him and what he’s done throughout his career, this awesome career that he’s had, it really lets me know what kind of people they are. It lets me know there are a lot of miserable people out there who wish they could be in R-Truth’s spot more than anything.

So I give R-Truth so much credit for being able to parlay his success over so many years—decades of success inside that square circle and on camera. Because this job, man, it’s a hectic job. There are a lot of people out there who just wish negative on you. But like I said, R-Truth has done something that not too many people can do. And R-Truth created that on his own. He literally created a spot on the show that was made for him and him only.
