A storyline on WWE SmackDown has been controversial, but not necessarily in a good way.

During his rivalry with Sami Zayn leading up to their WrestleMania 42 match, the current United States Champion, Trick Williams, and his buddy Lil Yacthy mocked Zayn by calling him the “Gingerbread Man.”

Since Zayn has orange hair, some people call him a “ginger,” and Trick took it to the next level by calling Him the Gingerbread Man.

After Trick won the US Title from Zayn at WrestleMania 42, the rivalry continued with Trick as a babyface and Zayn as more of a heel.

On SmackDown after WrestleMania, Sami Zayn dressed up as the Gingerbread Man and attacked Trick Williams, as well as his buddy Lil Yachty. It led to a lot of boos for Zayn since it was viewed as a cheap attack.

The May 1st edition of WWE SmackDown saw Sami Zayn also beat up the “Gingerbread Man” mannequin so badly that WWE is planning a funeral service of sorts for the Gingerbread Man on the May 8th edition of SmackDown.

During a recent episode of Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select, it was reported that several members of WWE’s creative team were against the Gingerbread Man storyline. A source in the company called it “hokey and archaic.”

There were also reports of pushback from members of the creative team regarding the direction of the Gingerbread Man story.

According to Sami Zayn, he’s not necessarily in a heel role, even though some people see him that way.

“I’m getting booed, but then I’m high-fiving fans on the way to the ring. There was this one week I got booed heavily, and then I stayed in the ring during the commercial break, and my match started, but during the break, when I was standing in the ring looking around, all these fans were waving and showing little hearts. I was like, what’s going on here?

To be fair, if you kick a mannequin gingerbread man below the belt, that might upset people because people want to have fun.”

The May 8th edition of WWE SmackDown in Jacksonville is the final stop before Backlash in Tampa on May 9th.

There’s also a big 6-woman tag team match with WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley teaming with Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss against the Fatal Influence trio of Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid.
