Triple H Canceled John Cena’s Original WWE Retirement Tour: “This Is Heat On The Company”

New details have come to light regarding John Cena’s original WWE retirement tour plans.

Last year, John Cena went on his WWE retirement tour that lasted through the year. During this time, he was involved in many iconic moments.

Perhaps the most shocking moment was when Cena turned heel at WWE Elimination Chamber and aligned with The Rock and Travis Scott. This was a bold decision since Cena hadn’t been a heel in over 20 years. Hence, much of the new generation of WWE fans had not experienced Cena as a heel. However, this decision didn’t sit well with the fans since Cena’s version of a heel was considered too boring. Therefore, WWE pivoted and turned Cena babyface before his SummerSlam match against Cody Rhodes.

During the latest season of WWE Unreal, which also covered John Cena’s retirement tour, the Last Real Champion recalled being told that he was going to turn heel at Elimination Chamber.

“You can ask me about any moment on the tour, and I can guarantee I can give you a ‘why’ for every single one.

We’re doing this monumental switch. At the Chamber, you’re going to be a villain and align with Travis Scott and The Rock because of this story with Cody.”

Cena further added that he had to come up with a reason for his heel turn. He then came up with the idea to ruin wrestling. That meant he had to put on boring work so that people hate him.

“I have to formulate a why. Why after 23 years am I doing this?

Well, it could be I’m the last of the old guard and I don’t like the new guard. What does that mean, to ruin wrestling? That means to take the fun away from the fans.

That means to win the WWE championship, with methodical, catastrophically boring work. To make people be like ‘f*** this guy!’

People were like ‘that’s it? What a s***** main event.’ Yup – that’s what I was going for! Watch the next one.”

Triple H then revealed in the writer’s room that John Cena had the idea to have a count-out finish for one of his World Title defenses at a PLE. However, this is out of left field for WWE. Cena revealed that he was told this finish would be considered too boring and result in heat on the company.

“Then it was explained to me that was too boring. Like, that was too bad. I think people are going to stop coming!

The perspective was ‘hey, this isn’t heat on you, this is heat on the company.”

Triple H then said that Cena earned the right to try something new. However, they realized it wasn’t working out and pulled the plug on his heel run.

“To some degree, John’s instincts were spot on. John earned the spot to be like ‘well, let’s take a shot at it.’

But there was a certain point in time where I was like ‘this ain’t working!’ You still got to deliver for these people. Hopefully you’ll do it in a manner which they don’t like that, but you’ve got to give them your greatness still.”

John Cena’s heel turn could’ve been booked much better if they had a proper reason for him to turn against the fans.
