WWE Has Not Released Ex-Champion
A former champion is still with WWE even though he’s not regularly appearing on television.
The team of Los Garza’s Angel & Berto has been regularly appearing on WWE SmackDown for months, but their former ally, Santos Escobar, has been nowhere to be seen.
In October 2025, there were reports that the former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar would be leaving the company, but he ended up re-signing with WWE and received a healthy raise in the process.
Ever since Escobar’s new contract was signed, there was a feeling that he might get a push since he was being paid a lot of money to remain in the company. However, Escobar hasn’t appeared on SmackDown or Raw in many months.
Santos Escobar last wrestled on WWE SmackDown on May 2nd, 2025, when he lost to Rey Fenix. Since then, he has wrestled at NXT live events and also on AAA shows since WWE also own the promotion based out of Mexico, which is where Escobar is from.
Clarification On Santos Escobar’s WWE Status
In an update on Santos Escobar’s WWE employment, Fightful Select reports that while some people on social media claimed Escobar was moved to WWE’s alumni section recently, that’s not true; it was done last October when his contract expired. As mentioned, Escobar re-signed with the company and wasn’t moved back to the roster.
Fightful also reported that WWE confirmed Escobar remains signed with the company.
Regarding Escobar’s role on AAA shows, there has been criticism of his performances on their shows, but it’s not known whether it’s because he’s unhappy or for another reason.
During his WWE career so far, Santos Escobar has been a heel, leading the Legado Del Fantasma group on NXT and on SmackDown. Escobar was also an ally of Rey Mysterio before turning on him, which led to Escobar’s biggest singles push on the main roster.
