WWE Accused Of Holding Down 4-Time World Champion
WWE has been accused on multiple occasions of doing this 4-time WWE World Champion dirty.
If there’s one star that fans wanted to see finally have another WWE or World Title reign, it’s Drew McIntyre.
McIntyre had come agonisingly close to having the gold on multiple occasions, especially at WrestleMania 40, where he won the title only to lo lose it minutes later to that year’s Money In The Bank winner, Damian Priest, who cashed in his case.
Despite being in title matches, McIntyre kept losing. This changed to everyone’s surprise when The Scottish Psychopath finally got his and won the belt by defeating Cody Rhodes in a Three Stages of Hell match in January this year.
Fans were sure that McIntyre would go into WrestleMania 42 with the title and were all the more excited for it. McIntyre also successfully defended his title against Sami Zayn at the Royal Rumble and, despite being a top heel, would get loud cheers from fans.
The fans and McIntyre’s jubilation would soon come to an end, however, with WWE putting the belt right back on Rhodes’s waist after having McIntyre lose to him this past Friday on SmackDown. General Manager Nick Aldis had announced a rematch between Rhodes and McIntyre for the title after the Elimination Chamber PLE, following the latter’s interference in the Elimination Chamber match, which he disrupted to attack Rhodes.
Now Cody Rhodes is Champion and will face Elimination Chamber winner Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42.
WWE Accused Of Putting Down Drew McIntyre
Former WWE star Rico Constantino (Known simply as Rico in WWE in the early Ruthless Aggression Era) gave his opinion on Rhodes winning the belt yet again on the Masters of Wrestling podcast.
Rico said that he fails to understand why Rhodes has to win the title again, since he’s already an established star and needs to help make the other wrestlers top stars as well, instead of having it all to himself. He asks Rhodes if he’s trying to be like John Cena or Ric Flair, who both had title reigns in double figures.
And for Cody Rhodes to take the title again, he’s already established. And from a talent such as Drew McIntyre, who I think is being pushed down or held down, had to give up the title again. Cody, what’s going on, bro? Come on. Uh, what are you trying to do? beat Ric Flair, beat John Cena. Oh, holding the title so many times. (3:335 onwards)
Fan backlash has been massive for the recent title bout between McIntyre and Rhodes, with the video of the match bringing in the most dislikes in a WWE video this year at 180k and counting.
