Becky Lynch was trying to make it big in wrestling when her journey took an unexpected turn.
Before becoming one of WWE’s biggest stars, Becky Lynch left her home country of Ireland as a teenager to seek success elsewhere. Her journey took her to Japan, where she grabbed attention as a young star.
Her first tour in Japan caught the attention of one of the country’s biggest advertising agencies. As she returned to Canada from the Nation of Rising Sun, she received a lucrative offer that she could not refuse.
Becky Lynch Was Featured In A Japanese Adult Magazine
In her memoir, “Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl,” The Man recalled doing her first photoshoot for the advertising agency she signed with as a young talent.
Becky Lynch stated that it was a lingerie photoshoot. Although she was not a fan of such photoshoots, she convinced herself to do it by reminding herself that her wrestling idol, Lita, had done them without affecting her character. She also thought she had to have more s*x appeal if she wanted to be respected as a wrestler.
The first day, they had arranged a photo shoot—another lingerie shoot, to be exact. Having decided I wanted to make it to the big leagues, I needed to figure out this s*x appeal thing and, in turn, would continue to do what I said I wouldn’t. On the flip side, I reasoned, Lita did, and she was still cool. And I worked hard for my body, why wouldn’t I show it off? I’m in better shape than the last time, I told myself.
As a side note, I believe there is nothing wrong with showing o your body and feeling the power of your own femininity and sexuality. However, I also knew that if I wanted to be respected as an athlete and a wrestler I had to have more than s*x appeal. In fact, I felt like I needed to reject it completely.… Not that it mattered, because in my confusion I went against it all anyway.
Although Becky Lynch complimented the professionalism and classiness of the photoshoot, she was mortified by where her photos ended up getting featured. The RAW star revealed that she discovered that the session was for Japan’s top adult magazine.
The people at the shoot were lovely, of course, and this shoot was much more professional and classier than the last one. However, the magazines they ended up in? Not so much. I was horrified, but also too meek to stand up and say anything to the agency.
“Very popular magazine,” they said. Yeah… I can see why.… It was the top porno magazine in Japan, and, as a result of my very Catholic upbringing and my intentions on how I wanted to be portrayed in general, I was mortified.
