“Toxic” Matt Cardona Advised Female Ex-WWE Star To Leave Him
Matt Cardona made a heartbreaking request to a female ex-WWE star.
Cardona initially joined the Stamford-based company in 2005. He had a 15-year run before he was let go six years ago during the COVID-era layoffs.
The former Intercontinental Champion went on to find success on the independent circuit, adopting the gimmick of The Indy God. He was joined by his wife, Chelsea Green, following her release from WWE in 2021.
However, Cardona replaced his spouse with former WWE star, Steph De Lander, after her return to the Stamford-based company three years ago.
Matt Cardona Thought He’ll Never Return To WWE
Speaking to Cody Rhodes on the “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” podcast, Matt Cardona opened up about his grind on the independent circuit, disclosing that he aimed to return to WWE. He disclosed that at one point, he thought it would never happen, so he advised Steph De Lander to leave him.
When asked by Rhodes if he thought he was “toxic,” Cardona admitted that he did.
Cardona: There were so many times I’m thinking like, ‘What else do I have to do to get back here?’ Like I was with SDL for a while, Steph De Lander. And I would call her up. When Chelsea left, I knew I needed a new valet.
And I’m like, ‘Okay, let me get someone different from my wife, a heater, someone who’s tall, who can beat somebody up. At one point, I’m like, ‘You need to get away from me because you’re not getting into WWE with me.’ I’m like, ‘Stay away.’ Cause I’m like, ‘I’m not getting back.’
Rhodes: Oh, you consider yourself toxic?
Cardona: That’s right. Yeah, because I was like, ‘If I’m not getting back now, I ain’t getting back. So, get away from me cause I’m not your meal ticket. [32:39 onwards]
