A top star in WWE NXT thought it was a “very special moment” when he got to be in the ring with Cody Rhodes.
On October 10th, WWE loaded up NXT since it was head-to-head with AEW Dynamite on that Tuesday night. John Cena was in the corner of Carmelo Hayes against Bron Breakker, who had Paul Heyman in his career. Asuka was there to face Roxanne Perez and even The Undertaker showed up at the end of the night to drop Breakker with a Chokeslam.
Cody Rhodes was also on the show to announce that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was coming back to NXT soon. Cody was also named the General Manager of NXT for that episode and he also set up matches for the following week.
When Cody was in the ring doing the promo, he was interrupted by NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov and NXT North American Champion Dominik Mysterio. This would lead to words being exchanged and of course, it led to Cody setting up a match between the two champions.
That match would see Dragunov beat Mysterio in a competitive match.
Ilja Dragunov calls being in the ring with Cody Rhodes a “very special moment”
The NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov enjoyed working with Cody Rhodes because he sees a lot of similarities with him. Dragunov told Nick Hausman of the Haus Of Wrestling podcast that he thought there might be an “energy overload” when he was in the ring with Cody.
“It was very interesting and absolutely a very special moment not only for me, but also for the audience in the arena and probably for the people watching on TV because it is as I said in the promo — meeting a person in the ring who stands, in a different way, for the exact same things that you stand for, that is something that very rarely happens.”
“Look at Cody Rhodes, he brings an energy, a fire, a passion to the ring in front of those arenas, in front of those people that not a lot of other people can do. I do that too for NXT. People feel what I do, the passion, the fire I bring. This is something very similar and I mean, this moment standing me and Cody Rhodes together in one ring, I was scared that there was going to be an energy overload.”
As for what’s next for Cody Rhodes, he’s currently on tour in Germany with the WWE Raw brand. At WWE Crown Jewel, Cody will face Damian Priest in a singles grudge match.
