Top NJPW Star Addresses Possible CM Punk Match

With the Forbidden Door set to reopen and CM Punk’s AEW return seemingly imminent, a top NJPW star has discussed the pair potentially facing off.

The first Forbidden Door event last year was a spectacle rarely seen in professional wrestling, as AEW and NJPW stars clashed across the bill, as well as marking the debut of Claudio Castagnoli as he was the surprise replacement for Bryan Danielson against Zack Sabre Jr.

Another match on that card saw Will Ospreay put his IWGP United States Championship on the line against Orange Cassidy. Not the match many expected ‘The Aerial Assassin’ to be placed in, it was still very well received by fans and critics alike.

With talk that CM Punk is set to return to AEW as part of the new Collision programme, Ospreay has now given his opinion on facing the former AEW World Champion.

During his discussion with Chris Van Vliet, Ospreay noted that he’s all about business if a match like that could happen.

Maybe. I have no idea what’s going on, but once again, I’m all about business and hopefully, it’s something that can work out.

Continuing on, Ospreay talked about whether he’d like to face CM Punk at Wrestle Kingdom.

I would want more of a paycheck (he laughs)I mean, now it is quite open, especially the relationship that AEW has with New Japan. It’s so different from how it was back in 2020. There wasn’t a Forbidden Door back in 2020. So now the relationship has grown. I mean Kyle (Fletcher) and (Mark) Davis are over there all the time now.

Doing AEW was a real eye opener, like, how TV wrestling works and how like the backstage vibes and stuff like that. I was kind of like, okay, I guess this is like how the American side is now because my only experience with American wrestling is the Indies and Ring of Honor and Ring of Honor was just to do a really good match. But like this is all about camera acting and camera cuts, but it did make me go like, okay, there’s another thing to learn.

On another subject, Will Ospreay confirmed that he wouldn’t lose sleep if he never got to compete at WrestleMania.
