Backstage Details On Who Decided To Split The Usos’ Undisputed WWE Tag Titles
The Usos hold two sets of Tag Team Titles, but WWE has decided to split them up with their next title defense coming in a match where only the Raw titles are on the line.
It was at Money in the Bank in July 2021 when The Usos beat Rey & Dominik Mysterio to become the Smackdown Tag Team Champions. That match, which took place on the Kickoff Show, was the beginning of the longest Tag Team Title reign in WWE history. The Usos have held those Smackdown Tag Team Titles for just about 550 days – around a year and a half.
On the May 20, 2022 edition of Smackdown, The Usos beat RK-Bro (Randy Orton & Matt Riddle), thanks to some help from Roman Reigns, to become the Raw Tag Team Champions as well. They have held those titles for nearly eight months.
The official title that WWE uses for The Usos is the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions. For the last several months, when they successfully defended those titles against The Street Profits, Drew McIntyre & Sheamus, The New Day and others, both sets of titles were on the line. However, that’s going to change.
After The Judgment Day’s Damian Priest, Finn Balor & Dominik Mysterio earned a title shot on the January 9th edition of Raw, it was specifically announced that The Judgment Day will face The Usos only for the Raw Tag Team Titles instead of both sets of titles.
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that it was a Paul Levesque (Triple H) move that allows The Usos to lose one set of belts and keep the others. It was explained to Meltzer that “the hope is it makes fans think it’s more likely somebody beats them for one set of belts.”
Next Monday, January 23rd on the 30th anniversary of Raw celebration, The Usos will defend those Raw Tag Team Titles against The Judgment Day’s Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio.
A title change is possible since The Judgment Day has yet to win any titles since the faction was formed last April and they have yet to win any titles.
There have also been rumors that The Usos possible opponents at WrestleMania 39 could be a reunited duo of Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn (if Sami is out of The Bloodline at that point), which would probably just be a Smackdown Tag Team Title match. Of course, nothing is official until it’s announced by WWE.
