“Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s Surprising Admission About WWE Unreal
The legendary “Stone Cold” Steve Austin had some thoughts about WWE Unreal that may surprise some wrestling fans.
There have been two seasons of the “WWE Unreal” series on Netflix, which shows the behind-the-scenes life of WWE superstars and the creative team. The curtain is pulled back on “WWE Unreal,” leading to mixed reactions.
While many fans enjoy learning more about the WWE product, some people like WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman are strongly opposed to the idea with Heyman literally saying “I’m not a fan of this show” on the actual show.
Another WWE Hall of Famer, Bubba Ray Dudley, says “WWE Unreal” is wrong and we shouldn’t expose the pro wrestling business like that.
The legendary “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is also a 2-time WWE Hall of Famer (counting his match with Bret Hart being inducted in 2025) who has old-school values when it comes to pro wrestling.
Steve Austin came up in an era of pro wrestling where wrestlers were taught to protect the business. However, the Rattlesnake told The Takedown on Sports Illustrated that he enjoys “WWE Unreal” even though he thought he would hate it.
“I thought I was going to hate it. When you come from the era that I came from, especially if you were in a Bill Watts territory, it was kayfabe. You didn’t smarten up anybody. If you smartened up anybody, you’re going to get fired. If you get in a fight with some guy at a bar and he kicks your a–, you’re going to get fired, because you got to protect the business.
So, I thought I was going to hate it from that standpoint. They give away a lot of information, but that’s what it’s for, right?”
Steve Austin Credits WWE Superstar For Making “WWE Unreal” A Good Show
What makes “WWE Unreal” so appealing for fans is the opportunity to see larger-than-life characters like Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, CM Punk, Rhea Ripley, and others behind the scenes. They are shown preparing for segments and also revealing certain insights about themselves that we might not have known without the “WWE Unreal” cameras nearby.
It’s that willingness of the WWE superstars to be open that makes Steve Austin a fan of “WWE Unreal” and what it’s all about.
“The talent is so likable. Whether they’re heels or babyfaces, the talent shines so much. You end up liking it just because the talent is so likable. The old school part of me says, ‘hey, man, you can’t give away too much,’ and I think it’s a good show because of the freaking talent on there.”
Comparing it to his era of WWE when he was regarded as the top star in the Attitude Era, Steve Austin thinks if “WWE Unreal” was around then you might think of Stone Cold differently.
“When I was doing my thing, you really thought I was that guy. I wasn’t back there just doing interviews, laughing, and joking because I got a sense of humor. Back then, you didn’t think I had a sense of humor. You believed that I was an a– whipping machine.
Now, if you saw me back there just laughing and joking with everybody, you might have a different perspective of Stone Cold the character.”
This coming Monday is March 16th, so WWE will heavily promote it as Austin 3:16 Day. However, Steve Austin is not scheduled to be at Raw as of this writing.
The good news for WWE fans is that Steve Austin will be at WWE World during WrestleMania 42 weekend in Las Vegas, but it’s not clear if he’ll actually appear on either night of the WrestleMania 42 event on April 18 and 19.
