Drew McIntyre’s WrestleMania 42 could have looked very different had these original plans taken shape.

McIntyre lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes this past week on SmackDown.

This means that Rhodes will main event WrestleMania 42 by going up against Elimination Chamber winner Randy Orton, who earned the No.1 Contender’s spot by winning that match.

A new report has revealed Drew McIntyre’s original plans, which were set to continue his Bloodline Hunter gimmick from back in 2022 when he had begun targeting the Usos and Sami Zayn of the Bloodline faction.

Fan expectations were high for this storyline and expected McIntyre to come face to face with Bloodline member Roman Reigns at some point, but the angle was dropped abruptly without a payoff.

Ibou of Self Made reported that had WWE stuck with the plan to do a third match between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, McIntyre would have assumed his Bloodline hunter gimmick once again to face Reigns around this time of the year. Instead, WWE fans got a short run of McIntyre as WWE Champion, and Roman Reigns, who won the 2026 Royal Rumble match, is set to face World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk in the main event at WrestleMania 42

Drew McIntyre Losing The WWE Title To Cody Rhodes Is Receiving Major Fan Backlash

Fans have not liked the company’s decision to put the top belt back around Rhodes’ waist.

They have expressed their dissatisfaction by bombarding the video of the match on YouTube with dislikes. The number of dislikes roughly stands at 150k as of this article’s writing.

Drew McIntyre’s WrestleMania 42 match is now to be decided, with Cody’s match confirmed for the main event of night 1 of the Showcase of the Immortals.
