Real Reason Vince McMahon Won WWE Royal Rumble
Vince McMahon is a Royal Rumble winner and now the real reason the disgraced ex-WWE chairman ever won the match has been revealed.
In 1999, the hottest feud in WWE was between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon. McMahon had WWE Champion The Rock as the jewel in the crown of his Corporation but Austin remained a constant thorn in his side.
McMahon thought he had the upper hand when he fixed it so Austin was the number one entry in the 1999 Royal Rumble but McMahon ended up as entrant number two. The two men ended up fighting all over the arena with The Corporation taking out Austin. Eventually, it came down to Austin and McMahon with a WrestleMania title shot on the line.
To the shock of everyone, and thanks to a distraction from The Rock, Vince McMahon dumped Steve Austin out of the ring to win the match.
In the end, Steve Austin ended up challenging The Rock at WrestleMania 15 for the WWE Title anyway so many people have wondered why McMahon won the Rumble match. And now we have the answer.
WWE Wanted To Elevate Vince McMahon
Speaking on What Were They Thinking? long time WWE executive Gerald Brisco explained the thinking that went behind McMahon’s surprise win:
Well, I’ll tell you what we’re what we’re thinking there. It was just to elevate Vince McMahon’s character a little bit to kind of prove that he belonged in the ring. (Vince) had the promos and the mannerisms to him. But he was never, you know, what you call a five-star type of worker.
According to Brisco, even WWE Superstars were questioning why McMahon had to win the Rumble match:
They got a lot of feedback and not all positive feedback too. Even some of the guys wondered why Vince was winning this thing, but they didn’t understand where we were going with Vince McMahon’s character at the time. It was just like anybody that goes over in that Rumble…it’s something that elevates your character and elevates your position in the company. So we wanted to prove to the fans that this was the way to do it.
An amended lawsuit has been filed against Vince McMahon as even more sordid allegations have come to light against the former WWE owner.
