New WWE Women’s Tag Champions Crowned

WWE Women's Tag Team Championship belts

It was a big night for the women’s division in WWE on Raw with the culmination of the tournament to crown new Women’s Tag Team Champions.

The championships had been vacant for several months after previous title holders Sasha Banks and Naomi were unceremoniously stripped of the belts. That decision came after Banks and Naomi walked out of a Raw show in May, but the suggestion is both women could be nearing a return to the company under the new regime led by Triple H.

The tournament to crown new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions was not without its issues. NXT duo Nikkita Lyons and Zoey Stark were pulled from the competition due to an injury suffered by Starks and Lyons being “medically unavailable” for a show in Canada. They were replaced by Toxic Attraction who were also withdrawn from the tournament due to an injury to Gigi Dolin.

Despite all the moving and shaking, the finals were set for Raw with the team of Dakota Kai and IYO SKY facing Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah. To the surprise of many, it was Rodriguez and Aliyah who picked up the win in Pittsburgh to become the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.

This win adds to Raquel Rodriguez’s NXT Women’s and NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships she won earlier in her career and the win marks Aliyah’s first gold of any kind in the company.
