Kenny Omega will be making his NJPW return at Wrestle Kingdom 17 and he has explained why he’s going to face Will Ospreay at the show.

As a former New Japan IWGP World Champion and AEW World Champion, Kenny Omega knows how to perform in big matches. That’s why he had a lot of confidence as he delivered a message to Will Ospreay that he would face the current IWGP US Champion at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th.

After being suspended for over two months for being in a backstage fight after AEW All Out in September, Omega returned last Saturday at Full Gear as he teamed with The Young Bucks against Death Triangle. Omega and The Young Bucks, collectively known as The Elite, failed to win the Trios Tag Team Titles, but it was later announced that it was the first match in a Best of 7 Series between the two teams.

While speaking to Sports Illustrated, Omega said he was returning to NJPW after four years away as an ambassador for AEW since he remains an Executive Vice President in AEW.

“I’m returning to New Japan as an ambassador of AEW. I’m returning to New Japan as an ambassador of pro wrestling. I’m also returning home. I left to start this new, exciting opportunity, but it’s still home. Now the things Will can do are things I cannot. He’s an athletic phenom. But as finely tuned as he is physically, he still hasn’t doesn’t have the knowledge or experience. I pushed my own physical boundaries in All Japan and DDT, but that’s not what I’m known for. My mind is my greatest asset, not my athleticism. That’s what’s allowed [Hiroshi] Tanahashi to have such a long and flavorful career.”

Omega also spoke about how when he left NJPW, he needed somebody to take his place as a top guy.

“I needed someone to take my place in New Japan, I wanted someone to take my place–and it was Will, Jay [White], and [Kota] Ibushi. Will is the only one to have a problem with that.”

As for his AEW career, Omega mocked CM Punk on the November 23rd episode of Dynamite by hitting the GTS that Punk did while also biting Pac’s arm in the match, which is reportedly what the former AEW Producer did to Omega during the All Out fight.

No word on if Kenny Omega plans to bite Ospreay. After all, the match isn’t taking place in Chicago.
