John Cena’s WrestleMania 39 Opponent Confirmed

John Cena

There are several matches considered “locked in” for WrestleMania 39 at this point including who John Cena will be facing.

When it comes to John Cena wrestling at WrestleMania 39, the former 16-time WWE World Champion turned Hollywood star will be in action when WrestleMania Goes Hollywood at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1st and 2nd.

As has been rumored for months, Cena is expected to face the current United States Champion Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39. WWE has obviously been teasing the match of late with Theory saying things like “The Champ Is Here” (a popular phrase that Cena used) while also using the words “ruthless” and “aggression” recently in a promo as well.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that the Cena-Theory match is locked in although it is not known if the US Title will be on the line or if Theory will still be holding that title.

If Cena wrestles Theory as expected then it will be a matchup between the guy that Theory has said repeatedly was his wrestling idol growing up. Cena is 45 years old while the 25-year-old Theory is seen by many people as a future main event star.

It is unknown how often John Cena will be on WWE TV in the lead up to WrestleMania since he is filming a movie in Australia in February and March.

John Cena also has a streak of wrestling at least one match in WWE every year since his debut year on the main roster in 2002. In 2022, Cena’s lone WWE match came on the final Smackdown episode of 2022 that aired on December 30th as he teamed with Kevin Owens to defeat Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. Cena didn’t take many bumps or spend too much time in the ring, but he got the win and the fans left happy.
