John Cena Doesn’t Intend On Breaking Huge Promise To WWE Fans
John Cena made a promise to WWE fans that he plans to keep.
The John Cena retirement tour storyline dominated WWE programming in 2025. The WWE GOAT turned heel, went back to being a babyface, became WWE World Champion for a record 17th time, and tapped out to Gunther in his final match in December 2025.
Even though John Cena could still put on classic matches like the incredible match with AJ Styles at Crown Jewel in October 2025, the 48-year-old Cena felt like it was time to call it a career as a WWE superstar.
In his current role as a WWE Ambassador, John Cena served as the guest host of WrestleMania 42 and also appeared at Backlash to announce the John Cena Classic tournament.
Regarding the John Cena Classic tournament that will see main roster talent face off against NXT wrestlers, as well as a championship being introduced, Cena recently spoke about his excitement for the concept.
“Oh my god, I’m super excited. It’s awesome. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and again, we’re still working things out—and I like that. I like that it’s a work in progress, but this is absolutely from me. I can’t tell you how excited I am about it.
I can’t wait till we announce the date and location. I think that’s obviously step one, and we’ll go from there.”
As for what he’s looking for in the John Cena Classic, the future Hall of Famer made it clear he likes seeing what people can do in the ring when they get a chance, just like he did as a rookie in 2002.
“I like turning the radar off, and I like seeing what people can do. I like seeing potential when the bright lights are on, and maybe that’s the nucleus of the John Cena Classic. It’s how I got my start.”
There are still plenty of details that need to be announced by WWE and Cena regarding how the tournament will work, when a champion will be crowned, if it’s a one-night event, or if it will take place over several nights. All of that will come in the future.
John Cena Will Remain A Retired WWE Superstar
Regarding a potential in-ring return, John Cena told NBC’s TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle that he intends to stay retired.
“Just in a new role. In-ring performance, I will not fall down again. I’m 49, I have given (my) physical best to WWE.
“The product is so fast, and time’s undefeated. Rather than hang around and put out a product that I feel might be less to our consumer, I made a promise to our fans – when I was young, when I was in my 20s, I said, and I quote, ‘When I’m a step slower, it’s time to go.’
“That’s happened, and it’s time to go.” (H/T Wrestletalk)
While Cena wrestled in jorts and sneakers, he has appeared in suits post-retirement, which is something he said he would do before his retirement. He remains true to his word.
