Mastermind Behind Blockbuster John Cena Feud In WWE Finally Revealed
John Cena once had a blockbuster feud with The Undertaker, and it turns out that he was the mastermind behind his own storyline.
In 2018, Cena failed to secure a position on the WrestleMania 34 match card after losing at the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber. Desperate for a spot at the event, Cena declared that he would challenge The Undertaker to a match at WrestleMania.
For weeks, Cena called out The Undertaker in an effort to get a match at The Showcase of Immortals event. However, The Deadman did not respond to his provocations. Cena ultimately claimed he would attend WrestleMania 34 as a fan, sitting in the crowd with a ticket and drinking beer.
During the event, a referee informed Cena that Taker had arrived in the arena for a match. Cena then ran backstage to change into his gear and returned to the ring, but he was met by Elias.
As disappointed John Cena was about to leave, the lights went out, and Undertaker appeared after lightning struck in the middle of the ring. Cena and Taker then faced each other in an impromptu squash match, where Taker won by pinning Cena with a Tombstone Piledriver in just 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
John Cena Takes Credit For His WrestleMania 34 Feud With The Undertaker
Speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, John Cena shared an interesting detail about his 2018 feud with The Undertaker. He revealed that he was the one who came up with the storyline, but also noted that he made sure to get approval from WWE creative before moving forward with the angle.
“It’s a creative narrative that allows the winner of the Rumble to go forward as planned, I don’t have to steal anybody’s shot. The winner of the Chamber to go forward as planned, I don’t have to steal anybody’s shot.
“Then I can say, the only way I can do this, is by doing something really stupid and kicking a big hornet’s nest, should I do it?
“That’s when you (Undertaker) are sitting at home, the crowd is like ‘Yeah, you should!’ and you’re like ‘Ah s**t, now I’ve got to go to work.’”
“So, yes, I want to take credit for that, but I also want to say that, in not going into business for myself, I asked if it was an option, and I was told that it was an option.” H/T WrestleTalk.com
