Gunther Set To Undergo Surgery After SummerSlam Defeat

Gunther WWE

Gunther will be undergoing surgery.

Following a wild main event at SummerSlam, neither CM Punk nor Gunther walked out with the World Heavyweight Championship.

In front of a packed house at MetLife Stadium, Punk and the reigning champion went to war for 30 minutes, fighting on nothing but guts and instinct. Gunther appeared to be on the verge of victory after a lengthy beatdown, but Punk fought back.

The former AEW star bloodied Gunther’s nose and eventually landed the GTS twice to grab an emotional victory. However, those tears of joy weren’t to last.

As he celebrated, Seth Rollins’ music hit, and he appeared on the stage in a knee brace and on crutches, but it was quickly revealed to be a ruse. Rollins threw the crutches to one side and dispensed with the brace before sprinting to the ring and repeatedly hitting Punk with the Money In The Bank briefcase.

After telling the referee that he was cashing in, Rollins hit Punk with a stomp before grabbing victory and the World Championship.

Gunther Dealing With An Injury

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer confirmed that the Austrian star’s bloody nose was planned in advance and tied to a real issue. He added that Gunther will now undergo surgery.

“I was told Gunther is having surgery on his nose. I was told that a couple of days ago. It was very clear from the finish Gunther is having surgery on his nose pretty quick because they shot the angle. That busted nose thing, that was 100% worked blood and planned. It was totally planned.”

Ahead of the show, it was reported that Gunther was dealing with a “nose issue” and was due to take some time off.

There’s no word on whether the now-former World Champion will miss any television time or be forced to take a break from the ring.
