Gunther Admits: “We Were The Guys That Hated John Cena”
Gunther opens up about his hatred for John Cena.
The Ring General was Cena’s last opponent in WWE. He retired him at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025 by making him tap out to his sleeper hold.
Gunther recently had an interview with WWE Retrospective, where he addressed his dislike for the Last Real Champion. He stated that those who worked with him in the independent and Japanese wrestling scenes also hated Cena.
Gunther explained his hatred by saying that Cena was a hero to the kids, not the grown-ups, and that was something that annoyed him:
“All the other colleagues I have that come from kind of like the same generation as I that grew up with all those indies, and Japanese wrestling, and stuff like that, we were the guys that hated John Cena, obviously. It was goofy. Like what is that? Like, it was like a wrestler for the kids, not for the grownups more or less.”
Gunther Says Defeating John Cena Was His Biggest Achievement In WWE
Gunther also talked about the heat he received after making The Champ tap out. He stated that defeating Cena in this fashion was the biggest achievement of his career because he destroyed his “Never Give Up” mantra.
People were frustrated that this is how it ended… when you hear the reaction after the tapout, it’s just crazy. That’s the biggest achievement too where it’s like the guy that always said ‘Never give up,’ I can make him give up. That’s maybe worth more than any title you can win.
Gunther is now heading towards WrestleMania 42, where he is going to face Seth Rollins. He recently targeted The Visionary, and on the latest episode of Monday Night Raw, he revealed the reason behind going after Rollins.
Gunther revealed that he was sick of people saying that Rollins is the best wrestler in the world, and of Rollins claiming that he is the best while he has never faced him.
