Dave Meltzer Gave Tony Khan Advice For Sting’s Retirement: “This Is Your Template”

Tony Khan hugs Sting on AEW Dynamite

Tony Khan has been given advice regarding Sting’s impending retirement by Dave Meltzer.

On the October 18 edition of AEW Dynamite Sting revealed when the final curtain will fall on his legendary wrestling career. The WWE and TNA Hall of Famer revealed to the world that his final match will come at Revolution in the spring of 2024.

No exact date has yet been announced for that show but for the last three years, it has taken place in the first week of March. Sting made his AEW debut at that event in 2021 when he teamed with Darby Allin to defeat Brian Cage and Ricky Starks in a cinematic Street Fight.

Speaking on the McGuire on Wrestling podcast, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer revealed that he contacted Tony Khan to give him pointers on Sting’s eventual retirement:

“I don’t remember if I sent – talked or emailed Tony Khan, but I definitely contacted Tony Khan after that final Noah match that [Great] Muta wrestled and I go, ‘This is your template.’ You know what I mean. Whenever it comes time for Sting, look for this for ideas because [Pro Wrestling] NOAH did such a phenomenal job.”

Will Tony Khan listen to the advice for Sting’s retirement?

The Great Muta’s retirement match came on the 22nd of January 2023 when Muta teamed with Sting and Darby Allin to defeat AKIRA, Hakushi & Naomichi Marufuji. Under his other moniker Keiji Muto, the Japanese icon had a final retirement match losing to Tetsuya Naito on the 21st of February 2023 before issuing one last impromptu challenge to his old rival Masahiro Chono who picked up a quick win over Muto.

Tony Khan has promised to give Sting a gift on the 25th of October 2023 edition of Dynamite, whether or not this will have anything to do with his eventual retirement plans remains to be seen.
