Darby Allin Praised As “Very Special Person” After Losing AEW World Title
Darby Allin has earned the respect of his AEW boss.
There aren’t a lot of wrestlers who can say they had a memorable World Title run that lasted just 39 days, but Darby Allin can say that.
That’s because if a wrestler holds a World Title for 39 days, then most fans would complain that the title reign was too short.
After winning the AEW World Title from MJF on April 15th, Allin defended the gold on television perhaps more than anybody in history. That’s because Allin defended the title on Dynamite five weeks in a row with victories over Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, TNT Champion Kevin Knight, Konosuke Takeshita, and “Speedball” Mike Bailey. Allin also has defended the AEW World Title on Collision twice, with wins over Sammy Guevara and Pac.
Unfortunately for Allin, that memorable AEW World Title reign ended at Double or Nothing in Queens on May 24th when Maxwell Jacob Friedman beat Allin to become a 3-time AEW World Champion.
For fans of pro wrestling who enjoy great matches, Allin delivered in that regard every time. The AEW daredevil literally puts his body on the line to entertain the fans, and that’s part of the reason why he’s so beloved by the fans.
At the AEW Double Or Nothing post-show media scrum, AEW Owner, GM, and Head of Creative Tony Khan tried to mention how much Allin means to the company.
“It’s hard to put into words how much Darby Allin means to this company because nobody would ever ask somebody to put their body on the line. No boss could ever go to somebody and ask somebody to do the kinds of things Darby Allin does.”
Tony Khan Thinks Darby Allin’s AEW World Title Reign Was Legendary
Even though Darby Allin only held the title for 39 days, Tony Khan spoke more about the former AEW World Champion and his memorable title reign.
“To wrestle that often, to wrestle that hard, to take those kinds of chances, to take the risks that he did. He’s a very, very special person and he was fantastic as the TNT Champion, he was fantastic teaming with Sting, and he’s been fantastic as the World Champion. Everything Darby Allin’s done for us, he’s done his very, very best.”
“Whether it’s been in his singles run and the singles championships, he captured the TNT title, the World Title as a tag team wrestler, or climbing Mount Everest. He’s done just about everything he’s ever set his mind to in pro wrestling, and I believe it’s one of the greatest title reigns of any kind we’ve ever had in AEW.
And it’s very fitting because I also think some of the greatest TNT title reigns have been Darby’s reigns where he put his body on the line and wrestled every week, but we’ve really never had a world champion wrestle at this kind of pace, this kind of schedule multiple times a week.”
Darby Allin has been with AEW since the company launched in 2019, and Tony Khan went on to speak about how glad he is that Allin is All Elite.
“Mox wrestled on the show every week, but there was only one show a week back then in the pandemic. We didn’t have Collision yet, and it was before Rampage even. So, we probably have never really seen anything quite like this with somebody going out twice a week often and wrestling at that kind of pace and taking these kinds of risks.
So he’s one of the greatest fighting champions we’ve ever had in AEW of any kind at any time, and we’re very fortunate he’s been here this whole time.”
It’s not known if Darby Allin will get an AEW World Title rematch as MJF did. In MJF’s case, he put his hair on the line to get the AEW World Title match, and MJF beat Allin, so there was no head shaving after all.
