This Current WWE Champion Could Shockingly Retire Very Soon
This major WWE star and current champion feels it could soon be time to call it a day on his career.
Many stars in WWE are currently over the age of 40. Wrestlers have been known to perform well into their 50s and 60s in the past, but the physical nature of the business does take its toll on the wrestlers’ bodies, leading them to consider retirement.
Current World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, who is 47, recently said that he would like to “gracefully bow out” at age 50.
The Best In The World is currently in good shape and has been a top main-event star in the company despite his age, and most recently defended his World Title successfully against Bron Breakker on the Netflix anniversary special episode of RAW.
However, time does catch up with everyone, and Punk is no exception. He recently reflected on how long he might have left in the business in an interview with Cinemablend.
WWE Star CM Punk Shares Thoughts On His Potential Retirement
In the interview, Punk gave examples of wrestlers like Terry Funk and Ric Flair who wrestled into their 70s, yet revealed that he considers 50 to be the right age to retire.
When I was 15, if you asked me if I’d be wrestling when I was 40, I would tell you ‘No, that’s crazy. 40 is so old.’ I’m 47, and I don’t feel old yet. Terry Funk wrestled for a long time, Ric Flair wrestled for a long time. I mean, there’s luchadors that are like in their 70s that are still doing it. Do I want to be doing that? Probably not. I would estimate probably the big 50 is when I should maybe gracefully bow out. Knock on wood, if nothing else horrible happens.
Punk praised WWE Icon John Cena for retiring at the right time last year when he was still fit and able but he admitted that he doesn’t know if that’ll be how his own retirement will look.
A lot of the times you don’t get a choice. That’s why it was special to watch John retire. To me, it was a perfect retirement. We’re celebrating a guy who isn’t dead and can still walk. I tell people all the time none of us are getting out alive. He got out at the right time.
He showed us a way to exit with dignity and grace, and I don’t know if mine will look that way. I don’t know what mine’s going to look like. I do know it’s coming sooner than later. I’m still having fun operating at a high level, no matter what anybody says, and until I can’t contribute, I still will.
CM Punk’s next assignment in WWE is to wrestle Finn Balor for the World Heavyweight Title next week on SmackDown in Balor’s home country of Ireland.
