CM Punk is referencing some sports legends when talking about a man who might just be his ultimate WWE opponent.

During his legendary WWE career, CM Punk had memorable rivalries with John Cena, Rey Mysterio, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, and other top stars.

In the two-plus years since returning to WWE, the rivalries Punk has had with Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins have been legendary as well.

At the WWE Elimination PLE on February 28th, CM Punk will defend the World Heavyweight Title against Finn Balor for the second time.

The match against Balor won’t be an easy test for Punk, but if Punk gets past Balor, he will have a date with Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42 on April 18/19 in Las Vegas.

CM Punk Feels Roman Reigns Grew After Punk Left WWE

When CM Punk left WWE in January 2014, Roman Reigns was still a member of The Shield alongside Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. About five months later, The Shield broke up as Reigns began receiving a singles push. At WrestleMania 31 in 2015, Reigns headlined his first WrestleMania, setting him up for an incredible run that made him WWE’s biggest star over the next decade.

While speaking to ESPN, CM Punk noted that his matchup with Reigns is similar to an NBA 1-on-1 between legends Michael Jordan and LeBron James, which never happened because Jordan was retired when James debuted in the NBA. In this case, Punk has proven he’s the best in the world again as the World Heavyweight Champion, so Reigns will get the chance to prove he’s the better man.

“Yeah, I think so. I think it’s fair to say. You know, that Roman didn’t exist when I left. He likes to say that they called him, they said, ‘Save this place, yada yada yada.’

There wasn’t that Roman Reigns when I left. So, my absence allowed him to grow into what he became and who he is now. So, yeah, in NBA terms, imagine if you could see MJ versus LeBron in a one-on-one game.” (H/T 411Mania)

Before CM Punk can face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42, Punk must beat Finn Balor at Elimination Chamber.

The next WWE PLE is Elimination Chamber on February 28th in Chicago. Here’s the lineup so far:

  • Men’s Elimination Chamber Match: Randy Orton vs. LA Knight vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Trick Williams vs. Jey Uso

  • Women’s Elimination Chamber Match: Rhea Ripley vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Asuka vs. Kiana James vs. Raquel Rodriguez
  • Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Becky Lynch vs. AJ Lee

You can watch WWE Elimination Chamber, streaming live on Saturday, February 28, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ESPN in the United States and Netflix everywhere else.
