Charlotte Flair Doesn’t Want Disrespect For Part Of Her WWE History
Charlotte Flair has addressed fans who speak poorly about a certain part of her WWE career.
The Queen of the Ring tournament continued on WWE SmackDown in Providence as Charlotte Flair picked up a huge win to move on to the semifinals of the tournament.
It was a Fatal 4-Way match between Flair, Jade Cargill, Women’s Intercontinental Champion Sol Ruca, and Lyra Valkyria, which had some controversy when Cargill’s wig came off, and she had to hold onto her hair while trying to perform in the ring.
The good news is that Cargill wasn’t needed for the finish because after she left the ring, Flair kicked Ruca out and applied the Figure Eight submission on Valkryia, who tapped out to give Flair the win.
Flair is already nicknamed “The Queen” thanks in part to record-breaking 14 WWE Women’s Titles on the main roster, but she’s yet to win a Queen of the Ring tournament, which would lead to a WWE Women’s Title shot at SummerSlam.
The first time Flair won a Women’s Title on the WWE main roster was actually in September 2015 when she beat Nikki Bella for the Divas Title. Flair’s win ended Nikki’s incredible 301-day reign as the champion.
In Flair’s first WrestleMania, when she was competing as just Charlotte, she won a triple threat match over Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 32 to become the new WWE Women’s Champion. It was the night when WWE retired the Divas Title (and its butterfly design) for good.
During a recent interview with Ring the Belle, Charlotte Flair spoke about what the Divas Title meant to her.
“It was like the one title that I felt like owned me and that I didn’t own. But I was also, as an athlete, so proud to hold that title—to hold the Divas Championship and feel like a diva, when at my core I was an athlete, and realizing that you could be both at the same time.”
Charlotte Flair Feels Like Retiring The Divas Title Was Big For Her Career
There are some wrestling fans who frown upon the Divas Title since it represented an era of women’s wrestling involving shorter matches and sometimes the women’s division wasn’t taken that seriously. Clearly, the women’s division has been stronger post-Divas Title era.
For Charlotte Flair, retiring the Divas Title was a big thing for her.
“And then when I retired it, I took a lot of pride because you have to look at the women before me. And had I not retired the Divas Championship and ended Nikki Bella’s longest-reigning Divas Championship reign, it was like—where would I be today?
Flair also says she isn’t sure why the Divas Title was controversial to some people.
“So it was all part of the history, but there was never for a second that I didn’t—I never understood the controversy in it. Like, just because it had a butterfly? Well, I’m still a badass, and I wear butterflies all the time.”
The discussion ended with Charlotte Flair talking about how she wants women to know they are strong and can do anything they set their minds to.
“Yeah, be strong. Yeah, that doesn’t mean anything. I think it’s the duality—having the feminine energy and being a badass at the same time. That’s what makes women so special—is that we can do it all.” (h/T Ringsidenews)
As for what’s next, that SmackDown win by Flair means she moves on to the Queen of the Ring Semifinals on the June 19th episode of SmackDown. The other Queen of the Ring Semifinal match will see Raquel Rodriguez face Iyo Sky on the June 15th episode of Raw.
