Charlotte Flair Opens Up About Dealing With Impostor Syndrome
Charlotte Flair has the world at her feet, yet she deals with a unique struggle.
In her own words, the 14-time women’s champion is a victim of imposter syndrome, as she admits to battling self-doubts and negative thoughts.
As if being the daughter of ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair was not a responsibility in itself, dealing with the pressure of fans’ expectations only adds more pressure on Charlotte Flair.
On Friday, the 39-year-old lost a crucial 3-way Elimination Chamber qualifying match when Kiana James sneaked into the ring to roll Flair for a successful pinfall and secure an upset victory.
Charlotte Flair Reveals Battling Imposter Syndrome
During a virtual interview with Doug Bopst of The Adversity Advantage Podcast, Charlotte Flair claimed that self-sabotaging comes to her easily, needing her to work on her character quite often.
More self-sabotage I’m trying… or what is like impostor syndrome. Instead of worrying about worst case scenario I should be worrying about best case scenario. And it’s easier to worry about the things that can go wrong instead of the things that could go right.
So really in the last year I’ve really tried to be like this could go right in so many different ways instead of this could go wrong — instead of worrying about like doing the opposite.
Charlotte Flair said that her pressure is self-imposed, but she knew how to combat it, which is by turning up every time she’s required to.
Well, I definitely put pressure, but I think it’s just showing up regardless whether you feel like it or you don’t feel like it. Whether you feel ready or don’t ready, you just have to show up.
And that’s what I do day in day out. Like even with different things that I want to approach or try or talk about — like even if I don’t know, just show up. Just trying is the… or just don’t turn things down because you don’t feel good enough.
Flair is currently involved in a tag team scenario alongside Alexa Bliss, but competes in occasional singles matches.
