Austin Theory Explains What Led To Vince McMahon Pairing

When Austin Theory was making a name for himself on the WWE main roster, Vince McMahon was his biggest supporter and Theory has explained why.

In late 2021, Austin Theory (who was just known as Theory for much of that period of time) started being part of segments with the former WWE CEO & Chairman Vince McMahon.

At WrestleMania 38 last year, Theory helped Vince beat Pat McAfee in a really bad match that Vince wouldn’t have won without Theory’s help.

In April 2022 a few weeks after WrestleMania, Theory became the youngest United States Champion at just 24 years old. A few months after that, Theory was inserted into the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at the last minute and left as the winner.

Things changed in late July 2022 when Vince “retired” from WWE due to numerous hush money payments and Theory no longer had Vince to share the screen with. Fans even mocked Austin Theory for not having “daddy” around to help him.

During an interview with Stadium Astro, Austin Theory spoke about how Vince McMahon took a liking to him.

“It all came from the conversation we had when I was doing the dark matches before I got to the main roster. I had like a 15-minute meeting with him and it was just about, ‘who are you?’ I think he was starting to notice and hear from producers and agents and other people that were there that had been around me.”

“They had been talking highly of me and he wanted to know who this person was. Sitting in that 15 minutes, I just let him know my passion and my work ethic and who I am as a person. I think that’s what led to it.”

“I think he wanted to test me on that because I remember the first thing I ever did on TV, he walked up to me, I was about to go out, this was when I was starting the selfie thing, he said, ‘Go out there and be confident like I know you are.'”

“That’s always stuck with me because I am confident and I stick with that and that’s what has always gotten me here and I can back it up. Just having that opportunity with him, it was amazing, and I’m glad that I was able to share who I am and it was enough for him to give me a chance.”

At WrestleMania 39 Night One this Saturday, April 1st, Austin Theory will defend the US Title against his childhood hero, John Cena. Considering it’s the first match at this year’s WrestleMania, it should be a huge match that many people would consider the biggest match of Theory’s career.
