AJ Styles recently made a huge revelation about one of his matches.

AJ Styles will be remembered as one of the greatest in-ring performers of this generation. He was so good in the ring. After being the face of TNA Wrestling, Styles arrived in WWE in 2016. Shortly after arriving in the sports entertainment juggernaut, Styles won the WWE Championship.

During the course of his WWE run, the Phenomenal One won multiple championships and competed against some of the best stars in the company. In July 2017, Styles was the reigning United States Champion. He defended the title against Kevin Owens at Battleground 2017. Owens was able to win after a cradle pin. However, it was reported at the time that Styles was supposed to retain his title after kicking out of the cradle pin attempt. However, he failed to kick out, and the title changed hands.

AJ Styles confirmed that he was supposed to retain his title at Battleground 2017

During a recent edition of his Phenomenally Retro podcast, AJ Styles recalled his match against Kevin Owens at Battleground 2017. The WWE Hall of Famer confirmed that he wasn’t supposed to lose that match since his shoulder was supposed to be up during the pinfall attempt. Styles then said that when he got to the back, he was angry because he thought his shoulder was up and the pinfall shouldn’t have been counted. However, Vince McMahon told him that his shoulder wasn’t up. Vince then asked Styles to go to the production truck to review the footage. After the Phenomenal One reviewed the footage, he admitted he was wrong and apologized to Vince McMahon.

“Here’s something that people don’t know. When I lost that one to him, I wasn’t supposed to lose. My shoulder was supposed to be up. I thought it was, I was p*ssed. I came back like, ‘What the freak is going on?’ Vince was like, ‘Your shoulder wasn’t up.’ I was like, ‘1000% it was up.’ I’m mad, not because I lost, because why the freak did he count something that wasn’t a pin? He goes, ‘Show him, take him to the truck and show him.’ I go back and watch it, sure enough, my shoulder is down. So, I go to Vince, ‘You’re right, I was wrong. Sorry about that.’” [H/T Fightful]

It’s surprising that Vince McMahon didn’t get mad at AJ Styles for the botched finish.
