24-Year-Old Star Chose AEW Over WWE? Truth Finally Revealed
The truth about a 24-year-old wrestler choosing AEW over WWE has come forth.
On January 14, CMLL star Persephone officially signed with the Florida promotion while also keeping her contract with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre in a unique dual-contract agreement.
Tony Khan announced the deal via X. According to the terms of the contract, Persephone can wrestle in the Mexican promotion while also making regular appearances in All Elite Wrestling.
Last year, she competed at AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door, challenging for the TBS Championship, then held by Mercedes Mone, in a four-way match also including Alex Windsor and Bozilla.
During her stint in CMLL, Persephone has competed against popular names, including Stephanie Vaquer, Tessa Blanchard, and La Catalina. Furthermore, she represented the promotional internationally in Japan during FantasticaMania tours.
The signing attests to All Elite Wrestling’s strong working relationship with CMLL.
It has also resulted in stories floating in the industry that she chose the Florida-based company over WWE. However, the truth is altogether different.
WWE Did Not Approach Persephone Before She Signed With AEW
WWE has rejected any report that claims it failed to sign Persephone because she chose AEW over them.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that WWE did not approach the 24-year-old star because they were not allowed to do so legally.
Persephone, I just want to clarify this. What I was told is that there have been stories saying she chose AEW over WWE, and of course the WWE side wasn’t happy about that,” Alvarez said on air. “WWE made it very clear they never spoke to Persephone. She has been under contract with CMLL and was not able to talk to WWE at all.
WWE was interested in her, but officially they could not talk to anyone who was already under contract with another company. That’s just how the process works. [H/T: Ringside News]
WWE clarifying its stance reveals that while they may have been interested in signing Persephone, no legal approaches were made. On the other hand, All Elite Wrestling continues to expand its women’s division while improving relations with overseas promotions.
