Top WWE Tag Team Captures Major Title In Another Promotion
A former WWE Tag Team Champions duo has struck gold again, although in a different wrestling promotion.
For the last couple of months, Erik and Ivar of War Raiders have been turning heads in AAA Lucha Libre Worldwide, feuding with the then-AAA World Tag Team Champions Pagano and Psycho Clown.
In early February, the duo defeated Los Americanos (Rayo & Bravo) and Money Machine (Colmillo De Plata & Garra De Oro) in a three-way tag team match to earn the rights to challenge for the tag titles at Rey De Reyes.
However, Pagano and Psycho Clown retained the belts after the match ended in a No Contest due to the four men refusing to comply with the referee’s commands. After the match, both teams continued to brawl, prompting security to step in and separate them.
The outcome of the match ensured that their feud continued, keeping the fans invested in the former WWE World Tag Team Champions.
Pagano & Psycho Clown Developed Trust Issues
Amid their successful title reign in AAA, Pagano and Psycho Clown began developing trust issues. The problem between them stemmed from backstage attacks on members of the Psycho Circus (Murder Clown, Dave the Clown, etc.).
Following the attack on Murder Clown, Pagano’s bandana was found at the crime scene, further intensifying the distrust between the tag champions.
On May 9, Psycho Clown directly confronted Pagano in an in-ring segment, but the latter refused to take ownership of the attack. After seeing the champions engaged in a heated argument, the War Raiders attacked them. However, the babyface duo got away without facing any major repercussions.
WWE’s War Raiders Crowned New AAA Tag Champions At Noche De Los Grandes
Of late, the War Raiders have not been featured heavily on WWE television. Instead, they became one of the few company talents to make regular appearances on AAA.
Tension between Pagano and Psycho Clown further escalated at Noche de Los Grandes on May 30 during their tag title defense against Erik and Ivar.
In the closing minutes, Psycho Clown inadvertently clotheslined Pagano, resulting in their opponents capitalizing on the mix-up.
The War Raiders, thus, became the new AAA World Tag Team Champions for the first time.
After the match, Pagano confronted Psycho Clown, only to get shoved by his tag partner. Pagano then left the ring, leaving Psycho Clown in the ring alone.
The War Raiders grabbed the opportunity to inflict some more punishment and began attacking Psycho Clown. While Psycho Clown urged Pagano to aid him, he was left to deal with his own fate at the hands of the WWE superstars.
The event also witnessed the unmasking of one of the El Grande Americanos following their defeat in the Mask vs. Mask match.
