WWE Star Planned For Gunther-Style Push

Gunther cuts a promo on Raw

A rising WWE star is set to get the ‘Gunther treatment.’

After dominating the European wrestling scene and beyond, the man now known as Gunther signed with WWE in 2019. Initially competing under the name WALTER, the Austrian star became the longest-reigning NXT UK Champion in history before taking that dominance to the United States.

Since arriving on the main roster, Gunther has become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history and established himself as one of the most formidable stars in recent history.

Interestingly, it seems WWE is set to apply that blueprint to a different rising star.

According to a new report from Fightful Select, the company has big plans for Ilja Dragunov. Although there are no plans for the NXT Champion to make an immediate move to the main roster, his call-up is expected when he loses the gold.

Within NXT, key figures backstage have been regularly impressed with his work and the lack of direction needed from producers. This is said to be unique to Dragunov.

Furthermore, one NXT talent praised the Bulgarian star for elevating everyone he shares the ring with, while a different source said he was wonderful to be around.

WWE Sees Ilja Dragunov In The Same Vein As Gunther

The report notes that several people within NXT see Dragunov in a similar vein to Gunther, and there are plans to give him a similar push when he arrives on the main roster.

Ilja Dragunov also recently earned praise from Kenny Omega, who was impressed with his performances and suggested a match between the pair would be something special.
