WWE has had to pivot creatively once again, this time with Randy Orton’s mystery caller angle.

Randy Orton has mysteriously been speaking to an unknown caller ahead of his WrestleMania 42 match against Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship.

Orton was seen speaking to this person during a video appearance on Raw a few weeks ago, and after the call was done, he said that this person reminded him of who The Viper really is.

Orton had turned heel just a week before that on SmackDown by brutally attacking his WrestleMania 42 opponent and long-time friend, Cody Rhodes, following the contract signing for their match.

He was once again seen speaking to this person backstage before going after another one of his old friends, Matt Cardona, who was trying to knock some sense into The Apex Predator about his actions.

Heel Orton also attacked musician Jelly Roll, who tried to stop Orton and Cody Rhodes from ripping each other apart when they brawled on SmackDown last week.

There have been many wild predictions of who the mystery caller could be from former stars and analysts. Names like The Rock, Shane McMahon, Randy’s dad Bob Orton were among them. Tommy Dreamer even said that it could be Vince McMahon on the phone. But a new report from Wrestling Observer debunks this prediction.

New Report Says Mystery Caller Not Vince McMahon; WWE Pivoted

Brian Alvarez said on Wrestling Observer Live that WWE was originally going for someone who would’ve shocked fans, but it wasn’t Vince McMahon.

Who they were gunning for was not explicitly stated in the report, but it does say that WWE has pivoted from that person because the deal fell through, and the final reveal could happen on the next SmackDown episode.

I will say this: I do know that they had an idea for somebody who was on the phone. It was not Vince McMahon, and the deal for this person fell through. If it had not fallen through, everybody would have been like, ‘What? Who?!’

So we’ll find out who they ended up coming out with on the show tomorrow, but it was a really bizarre first choice that they had.
