WWE News: First Match Announced for WrestleMania Backlash on May 16 – Lashley vs. McIntyre WWE Title Rematch

The first match has been announced for WWE’s next pay-per-view WrestleMania Backlash on May 16. Yes, after WWE had the Backlash name by itself going back all the way to 1999, they have decided to call it “WrestleMania Backlash” now. The first match will be a WrestleMania 37 (read the review here) rematch for the WWE Title.

Last night on WWE Raw, Drew McIntyre let Bobby Lashley’s friend/manager MVP know that he wanted another shot at the WWE Champion, Bobby Lashley. MVP told McIntyre to get to the back of the line. Braun Strowman and Randy Orton interrupted to say that they wanted that title shot. That led to WWE Official Adam Pearce set up the predictable main event of McIntyre vs. Orton vs. Strowman.

During the main event, Strowman was dominant for most of the match until Orton planted him with a DDT off the ropes. Orton hit the RKO on Strowman as well. While Orton was pinning Strowman, McIntyre got back in the ring (he was on the floor) and hit a Claymore Kick on Orton and pinned him. That meant that McIntyre won the right to challenge Lashley for the WWE Title again.

After the match, the former Retribution duo of T-Bar and Mace gave McIntyre a double team Chokeslam in the middle of the ing. It teased the idea that maybe T-Bar and Mace have joined The Hurt Business group, but that hasn’t been confirmed at all. It’s just a cliffhanger tease going into next week.

Lastly, apparently the original plan (that we posted about one week ago) was to do Money in the Bank on May 16 and Backlash on June 20, but WWE tried to go with Backlash after WrestleMania instead. Maybe that means Money in the Bank will be in June. That hasn’t been announced yet.

TJR Thoughts: It should be a good match at Backlash. I thought Strowman might win, but I certainly Drew winning because I think he’s an awesome wrestler. I just thought that WWE might change it up a bit.
