Ex-WWE Champion AJ Styles retired at the Royal Rumble.

The Phenomenal One faced Gunther in a singles match at the Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a stipulation stating that if Styles lost, he would be forced to retire. Unfortunately, Styles succumbed to Gunther’s offense and eventually passed out in the ring, resulting in the loss.

After the match, Styles was clearly shaken and disappointed, as it was obvious he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the ring. He even considered leaving his wrestling gloves in the middle of the ring as a traditional sign of retirement, but ultimately put them back on.

That moment alone left the crowd wondering if there was still a small chance that Styles might not be done just yet. However, speaking on his Notsam Wrestling podcast, WWE personality Sam Roberts confirmed that AJ Styles is indeed retired, adding that he does not expect Styles to wrestle again.

I don’t personally think we’ll see him [AJ Styles] wrestling anymore. I think he’s done. I think he’s done. (From 25:37)

WWE Legend AJ Styles Has Officially Retired

Following the Royal Rumble, WWE personality Peter Rosenberg also confirmed the news. Rosenberg revealed that he spoke directly with Styles after the match and said that AJ is a man of his word and thus he has officially retired.

“So just to be clear, ’cause I know AJ went back into the ring, he went up there, took in a second round of applause. I spoke to AJ. It is very much the end. This is it for AJ Styles. He is not the kind of guy who goes back on his word when he says he’s having a match with his career on the line.”
