WWE Character Was Specifically Built To Face The Undertaker At WrestleMania
A former WWE superstar knows he was being built up for The Undertaker, but the match never materialized.
Mordecai is a former WWE superstar who debuted in 2004 and had a very short run on the SmackDown brand.
The character was dressed in white and stood in contrast to the darkness brought on by The Undertaker. The wrestler portraying the Mordecai character was Kevin Fertig, and he looked impressive in the role, but it didn’t last long.
While Mordecai picked up PPV wins over the likes of Scotty 2 Hotty and Bob Holly at Judgment Day 2004 and Great American Bash 2004 respectively, he was taken off TV completely after losing to Rey Mysterio on SmackDown. Fertig would re-emerge as Kevin Thorn on ECW about two years later.
In an interview with The Velvet Ropes on WrestlingNews.co, the former Mordecai admitted that the character was designed to be a future opponent of The Undertaker, perhaps at WrestleMania, but that obviously didn’t come to pass.
“He was a big, big part of the Mordecai character. When all that first got pitched and everything else like that, it was really to wrestle him, eventually, in WrestleMania.”
The Undertaker’s Most Shocking Loss Surprised Everybody
One of the most famous matches The Undertaker had in his legendary career was at WrestleMania 30 in 2014 when he lost to Brock Lesnar, who put an end to Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak. Lesnar became the 1 in 21-1 as Paul Heyman reminded fans many times over the years.
Veteran WWE announcer Michael Cole was on the call for that match, and he recently said he thought The Undertaker would kick out Lesnar’s F5, but it didn’t happen.
“When Brock hit Taker with the F5, I believed that Taker was going to kick out. It was almost a nonchalant one, two, and I was about to say kick out when I froze. The first thing that came to mind was, ‘The Streak is over.’
In retrospect, I don’t think I could have done that any better. I don’t think there was a call that could have been done better than that. If I was screaming over the top or whatnot, it just does not have the effect because you could tell in the moment.
I don’t watch back much of my stuff, but I do go back every once in a while, and it’s hard to ignore this because it’s in every single WrestleMania package we ever built.
When I do listen back to that, I get chills sometimes because it was the perfect call because of the shock value. You had a guy in myself who was legitimately shocked that this happened. It was a historical moment in our business.”
