A former champion in WWE addressed a rumor about what Vince McMahon taught him about playing a memorable character.

When Montel Vontavious Porter was introduced to the WWE Universe in the mid-2000s on the SmackDown brand, he was known as a cocky, athletic wrestler who had a big ego.

At the time, in the sports world, there were guys like the NFL’s Terrell Owens, who was an incredible talent on the field but, off the field, was known as something of a jerk.

For Vince McMahon’s WWE world, a character like MVP was a perfect fit as a heel that could feud with babyfaces like The Undertaker, Kane, and others.

The former 2-time WWE US Champion, MVP, spoke on his podcast about a rumor that former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, who ran WWE creatively during MVP’s run, coached MVP on how to act like a billionaire.

“That never happened, man. That never happened. Not once. Vince McMahon never coached me and told me to look at billionaires. That never happened. Not even remotely true. What where do you guys get this nonsense from, man? Jeez.”

MVP Had To Teach Vince McMahon About The Character

As he continued to talk about his MVP character, the AEW wrestler/manager said that while Vince McMahon coached him on some things, MVP also had to educate Vince about what the character was about.

“I mean, he coached me on a lot of things, but not about how to look like a billionaire… the MVP persona came gritty. There was nothing to that Vince was going to coach me about regarding the MVP persona because I created it. I knew what it was. I had to explain to Vince what a baller was, what it meant to be balling.”

Regarding the teachings of Vince McMahon, MVP said it was more about being a performer on television.

“Vince coached me on presence… and we make our money here with facial expressions and how to work the cameras and things like that. But not once did Vince ever tell me to study like — no, that’s ridiculously wrong.”

MVP currently works for AEW as part of The Hurt Syndicate with Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin, although the trio has been kept off television for several months.
