WWE Asked One Popular Star Not To Participate In Make-A-Wish Events

A WWE legend has made a huge revelation.

Mick Foley made a career for himself out of taking insane risks during his matches. He would not hesitate to put his body on the line for the sake of the fans.

Foley was also known for portraying three other characters during his WWE run – Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack. The most popular of them was Mankind. As Mankind, Foley would portray a deranged psychotic character who would go to any lengths to hurt his opponents in the ring. However, playing this character came at a huge cost since many younger fans were scared of him.

WWE asked Mick Foley not to participate in Make-A-Wish events

During an interview with Inside The Ropes, Mick Foley revealed that Vince McMahon wanted him to do an up-close and personal interview similar to the one Dustin Rhodes did, where he spoke about being in the shadow of Dusty Rhodes.

“There had been a really effective, up-close and personal interview with Dustin Reynolds where he spoke to the crowd. I don’t remember who did the interview, and it was a multi-part, multi-segment interview that was edited into multiple segments over the course of four or five weeks.

He said, ‘My name’s Dustin Reynolds. I have a character named Goldust. I’m trying to remove myself from the shadow of my very famous father.’ He talked about his daughter and his wife, and that’s what they wanted me to do.”

Mick Foley argued that his character was effective because he was the only person in WWE history to be asked not to participate in Make-A-Wish events.

“I said, ‘Vince, I understand that, but this character is effective. I can prove it was effective because, in the history of WWE, I was the only wrestler ever specifically asked not to participate in Make-A-Wish events.’ And that’s true.”

This broke Foley’s heart since he really wanted to meet the kids. He recalled even asking Bret Hart if he could join him on his visits, but that didn’t end well.

“It broke my heart. Then Dave Hebner said, ‘Brother, you have to understand, this is supposed to be one of the best nights of their lives, and you’re making it one of the worst.’

I would ask Bret Hart or somebody who had a wish visit, because nobody was requesting me specifically, ‘Hey, can I join your visit? I’d like to meet the kids.’ Apparently, some of them were fleeing in terror. So, the character was effective.”

Foley and Vince came to a compromise that Jim Ross could do the interview and ask him questions he was not aware of, and Foley would give honest answers.

“Then Vince said, ‘Well, I’d really like people to know you.’ I said, ‘What if JR asks me questions I’m not aware of? I give 100% honest answers, but I do them in the character of Mankind.’

He said, ‘You think you can do that?’ And I looked at him and said, ‘I know I can.’

Mankind will forever be remembered as one of the most beloved and iconic characters in WWE history.
