Why WWE Really Wanted Bret Hart To Win Iconic Match
WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart has revealed that one of his most famed opponents delayed serious back surgery just so they could have their title match.
In WWE in 1991, Bret Hart was breaking out from the ranks of the tag team division to forge his own path in the company. At SummerSlam 1991, Bret Hart challenged Mr Perfect (Curt Hennig) for the Intercontinental Championship with The Hitman winning his first singles gold in the company. But things could have turned out very differently.
Mr Perfect Delayed Surgery For Bret Hart Match
Speaking at a live event with the Johnny I Pro Show, Bret Hart revealed why WWE wanted to get the title off Mr Perfect and that the champion delayed getting back surgery just so they could have their iconic bout:
Well, the backstory to the match with Curt (Hennig) was that he had hurt his back really badly. That’s why I think they were trying to take the belt off him because his back was really bad and then they told him they were gonna make the decision that they were gonna change the belt at SummerSlam and he was getting his back — at that time, he was gonna get surgery on his back.
But when he found out that it was me that he was gonna drop the belt to, he said, ‘I will be there no matter what.’
Bret Hart also hit back at criticism of his WrestleMania 12 Iron Man match with Shawn Michaels claiming that the bout was as great as many fans think it is.
