John Cena made a special appearance during the Backlash PLE on May 9.

His segment had already been announced by WWE, although the context was kept a secret. Fans speculated that it would have something to do with Club WWE, the exclusive all-access pass the promotion had been advertising for several weeks.

However, it was not the case.

Instead, John Cena touched upon the evening of his retirement at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December last year, and how the old and new wrestlers made the event a success.

The 49-year-old then revealed that there had been discussions within the company, which led to the creation of something called the John Cena Classic.

He explained the concept as one that pitted the main roster wrestlers against NXT talents, with the winner being crowned the namesake champion. Cena also stated that the fans would play a role in it via voting, and their votes would be a decisive factor in determining who becomes the victor.

While no details were provided regarding the specific date when the event would commence, a new update has emerged about it.

When Will John Cena Classic Be Held?

Following the announcement of the John Cena Classic, it received a bit of criticism from industry insiders.

Cena addressed the criticism during a virtual interview with Sports Illustrated, where he revealed that the event was his idea and was not conceptualized overnight, but rather took several months to be developed with the help of the WWE management.

The John Cena Classic took four or five months for me to get a proper situation where I could talk to Triple H and they’ve digested the information.

We’ve been working out the details for about two months now and we’re going forward.

During yesterday’s Town Hall meeting in the Stamford promotion, it was decided that the project would not take place immediately. At the moment, the company is targeting the latter part of the year for the event to make its TV debut.

John Cena Intends To Remain Retired From Wrestling

The former World Champion’s retirement was a buzzworthy event, but it also led fans to speculate about whether or not he would return to the squared circle again.

While speaking at multiple interviews, Cena has maintained that he has retired from wrestling and intends to keep it that way because it was a promise that he made to the fans and he did not like breaking promises.

He reiterated his sentiment recently, when he appeared on NBC’s TODAY, where he also confirmed that he was in a new role with WWE.

Just in a new role. In-ring performance, I will not fall down again. I’m 49, I have given (my) physical best to WWE.

The product is so fast, and time’s undefeated. Rather than hang around and put out a product that I feel might be less to our consumer, I made a promise to our fans – when I was young, when I was in my 20s, I said, and I quote, ‘When I’m a step slower, it’s time to go. That’s happened, and it’s time to go.
