Unbelievable Rule For First WWE Women’s Cage Match Finally Exposed
A conversation between WWE Hall of Famers revealed an interesting rule about the first women’s Steel Cage Match in company history.
The WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus was a guest on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast as they spoke about some unique women’s wrestling history.
During the discussion, Stephanie McMahon brought up Trish Status’ Steel Cage Match with Becky Lynch at WWE Payback in September 2023. Trish said she loved the match. Stephanie asked if that was Trish’s first cage match. Trish confirmed that it was because during her full-time WWE run from 2000 to 2006, WWE wasn’t doing women’s cage matches.
Trish: “Yes, because back in the day, we didn’t get – those were for the boys. The boys got the cage matches. We did have one. There was one back in the day. It was a novelty. They were not allowed. The instructions literally were like – it was Amy (Lita) and Victoria – but don’t touch the cage.”
Stephanie: “But they did use a chair I think. I think I remember that.”
Trish: “Yeah but not the cage. Not the cage. It’s a cage match. If the girls did it, it wouldn’t look as believable as when the boys did it or something. There was some mindset back then.”
The First WWE Women’s Steel Cage Match Was Between Victoria And Lita
Trish Stratus went on to say that when she had her run in WWE in 2023, she wanted to do things she hadn’t been able to do earlier in her career, like having a steel cage, and so she did that.
The match that Trish and Stephanie discussed as the first WWE women’s cage match was on the November 24, 2003, edition of Monday Night Raw, in which Victoria defeated Lita after Matt Hardy slammed the cage door on Lita’s face. Victoria crawled out of the cage door to get the win.
