Talks with WWE centered around The Young Bucks wanting to face a huge tag team, but it never materialized.

The Young Bucks duo of Matt & Nick Jackson are one of the most successful tag teams in wrestling history that never worked for WWE on a full-time basis.

In AEW, The Young Bucks are Executive Vice Presidents and 3-time AEW World Tag Team Champions. They’ve also held the Tag Team Titles in promotions like NJPW and ROH as well.

While the Bucks are entrenched in AEW and likely will remain there for many more years, going to WWE is a huge “what if” that may never happen.

On a new episode on the Bucks’ Being The Elite YouTube channel, they revealed that they talked to WWE’s Triple H about facing The New Day. The Bucks and their pal Kenny Omega went face-to-face with the New Day’s Kofi Kingston, Big E & Xavier Woods at E3 in 2018, so the Bucks were hoping it would set up a match. Matt Jackson explained what happened.

“We truly were trying to get a New Day, Young Bucks, Kenny (Omega) match to happen, an Elite vs. New Day match. Actively.

They said they were trying on their side, we were talking to our bosses, even to the point in 2018 we got on the phone to Triple H and we talked and said ‘we would really like to do this match’.

I don’t know if he was necessarily interested in just doing that match, I think he was more interested in pursuing us to work for him, but we talked to him about it, so we were serious about doing the match, and we thought we’d probably be able to do it.

And unfortunately we never did.”

This story became relevant again recently since The New Day’s Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were released by WWE after the team asked to be let go due to not wanting to cut their salary. That means The New Day could be AEW-bound in a few months, and they could face The Young Bucks later this year.

The Young Bucks May Be One Of The Greatest Tag Teams Ever

Adam Cole is a former ROH World Champion and WWE NXT Champion who is currently injured, but he also knows the Bucks very well.

In a 2025 interview, Cole made the claim that the Bucks might be the best tag team ever.

“I’ve known Matt and Nick practically my whole career. It’s been a really, really long time since I’ve known them, and they are two of the best guys in the entire world, two of the most talented guys in the entire world, too, whether working with them at Pro Wrestling Guerilla or at Ring of Honor and stuff like that.

So the cool thing was, too, even before I got to AEW, I had always kept in touch with Matt and Nick. We always had a relationship.

But I remember leading up to being able to debut at AEW, one of the biggest things was, ‘Oh my god, I’m so excited I’m gonna get to see Matt and Nick every week.’ So, I love them. They’re one of the greatest tag teams, if not the greatest of all time. They really, really are, and two just incredible guys. So it’s really, really, really awesome to get to be around them again.”

The Young Bucks are currently out of the AEW World Tag Team Title picture, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see the brothers holding gold again soon.
