The Undertaker Has A Major Warning For WWE

The Undertaker has given some interesting thoughts on the creative process of WWE.

In the current WWE landscape, the company’s multiple brands are being run by some of the greatest wrestlers ever.

Triple H is the Chief Content Officer of WWE, running the creative team for the main roster shows Raw, SmackDown, and PLEs. Shawn Michaels runs the NXT brand, including its PLEs.

As for the AAA brand, The Undertaker is one of its main bookers, running most of its shows out of Mexico. Taker’s version of AAA has earned a lot of praise from fans of the show.

Considering The Undertaker was a WWE superstar for 30 years and spent the majority of his time in the main event, it’s probably not a surprise that he knows how to book a pro wrestling show well. While appearing on the Nightcap podcast, Taker spoke about long-term booking in WWE.

“You can have this brilliant idea in your mind—like, ‘Oh man, I want to see wrestler A fight wrestler B’—and you think it’s going to be the greatest thing ever. And then you start looking at it like, ‘Man, I’d love to get this match all the way to WrestleMania.’

But then you put it out there, and sometimes it ain’t as good as you thought. It’s just like a play call—you think it’s going to work. At practice, it works, right? But if your audience doesn’t resonate with it or doesn’t get with it, then it’s… I call it pissing up a rope—you ain’t going to get nothing but your hands wet.”

The Undertaker Doesn’t Want WWE To Let Fans Dictate Everything

While continuing on about the creative aspect of pro wrestling storytelling, The Undertaker made the point that you can’t let the fans dictate stories because they don’t necessarily know how the story is going to end.

“There’s a lot that goes into that. Obviously, they’re not in the know of the big picture. And sometimes people get impatient—they don’t want to wait. That’s part of storytelling.

You’ve got to have those beats in the story that keep them captivated—like, ‘Okay, I want to see what happens next.’ Back in the day, during the Monday Night Wars, we’d go off with a cliffhanger and people had to wait. You couldn’t just go to YouTube—you had to wait until the next Monday night to see what was going to happen.”

That led The Undertaker to make the point that you have to trust your creative process and not necessarily let the audience tell you what to do next.

So yeah, to answer your question—you have to have good creative, and it has to resonate with your audience to a certain extent. You have to listen—but you can’t let it dictate everything. If it solely dictates, then you lose focus of what you’re trying to do.”

On WrestleMania 42 Saturday, The Undertaker will host his Six Feet Under podcast with the legendary John Cena as the guest. It will air on WWE’s YouTube channel at 2:30 p.m. ET., so it will end several hours before WrestleMania begins.
