The WWE contract rumors continue to swirl this time with Sami Zayn’s name in the mix.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that the WWE contract of Zayn’s close friend Kevin Owens is set to expire in January 2022. That’s a lot earlier than the believed date at some point in 2023.
It has been reported by Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp that an update from a WWE source noted that Zayn’s contract “is not up in the fall.” This is to counter the rumor going on some websites that claimed Sami’s deal with WWE was up this fall. The report noted that Zayn hasn’t commented on his WWE contract status.
Sami Zayn was in a match on Smackdown last week (September 3) when he picked up a win over Dominik Mysterio.
The reason there are a lot of rumors about WWE superstar contracts expiring is because of the names that have left the company in recent months.
Adam Cole made his AEW debut this past Sunday at All Out. Prior to that, there were reports that he was negotiating with WWE about possibly staying in the company, but he chose AEW. The WWE contract situation was messy because it expired in July (much sooner than they thought), was extended through August and now he’s in AEW in September.
In the case of NXT’s Pete Dunne, his contract is supposedly up soon with WWE apparently offering him a contract extension and his future is unknown.
When it came to Malakai Black (who wrestled as Aleister Black in WWE), he signed with AEW over 30 days after his WWE release even though he was a main roster talent that should have had a 90-day no-compete clause. For some reason, it was still 30 days for Black.
There have also been recent reports that there is “significant heat” in WWE towards people in the company that were not on top of the contract status of some of these wrestlers.
As for Sami Zayn’s future, whenever he’s a free agent, he’ll be a sought-after talent due to how gifted he is as a professional wrestler. What we do know is that Owens and Zayn close friends, so if Owens did leave WWE early next year then it’s possible Zayn could too whenever he’s a free agent.
