Ronda Rousey isn’t shy about criticizing the company she works for in her role as the Smackdown Women’s Champion noting there aren’t enough women on the WWE roster.
Rousey became the Smackdown Women’s Champion twice in 2022. She beat Charlotte Flair for the title at WrestleMania Backlash on May 8th. That reign only lasted two months after Liv Morgan cashed in the Money in the Bank contract on Rousey and left with the title.
At Extreme Rules on October 8th, Rousey got her revenge against Morgan by winning back the Smackdown Women’s Title in an Extreme Rules Match.
On a new episode of her Ronda On The Road YouTube series that was originally filmed after WrestleMania Backlash in May along with a title match against Raquel Rodriguez on Smackdown. Rousey was critical of the lack of women’s wrestlers in WWE:
“I wonder who’s next [to challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship]. It’s forcing me to look at the entire field at SmackDown, which is less than ten people. Shotzi, Aliyah, Raquel [Rodriguez], Nattie, Shayna [Baszler], Naomi, Sasha [Banks]…is that it? That’s it. No, I want to be an active champion. I came back to wrestle so I could wrestle, you know, I like doing promos and run-ins and all that stuff, it’s cool and all, but I like wrestling and I want to be able to get more ring time in because I just get better every time.”
“I want to be an active champion, I want to fight. I mean, there’s just not enough women on either of the rosters [Raw and SmackDown], but I mean you could argue that there’s not enough air time for all the men and women’s rosters combined, and so it’s like do you reduce the roster and give everyone more air time, or do you add to the roster and give it more depth.”
It should be noted also that this video was from when Vince McMahon was running the WWE creative team. Now that Triple H is in that role, there have been more women featured on the main roster shows while the likes of Dakota Kai & IYO SKY have been added to the mix as well. There was also a recent update about Naomi possibly returning to WWE soon.
During the same video, Rousey was critical of WWE for a lack of women’s storylines as well.
