Rey Mysterio Injured On SmackDown, Match Stopped

Rey Mysterio injured SmackDown

Rey Mysterio has had better nights in the ring than on SmackDown.

Friday Night SmackDown in New Orleans, Louisiana saw members of the LWO face off as Santos Escobar took on Rey Mysterio for the chance to challenge Austin Theory for the United States Championship. Both men had won four-way matches in previous weeks to move on to the final against each other.

Santos Escobar picked up the victory but not in the way he would have wanted or was apparently planned. Mysterio attempted to hit a baseball slide dive to the outside but Escobar moved out of the way before hitting a dive of his own onto the WWE Hall of Famer.

Rey Mysterio appeared to hit his head as he crashed to the floor. The ringside doctor was seen attending to Mysterio before referee Jessika Carr called off the match declaring Santos Escobar the winner. Mysterio was able to get to his feet and embrace Escobar after the match.

Was Rey Mysterio Really injured on SmackDown?

Fightful Select reported that the injury suffered by Mysterio was legitimate and caused WWE to call an audible and end the match. Santos Escobar was planned to be the winner of the bout and was slated to score a clean win over the former WWE Champion. It was also noted that a planned backstage segment to follow up the match had to be scrapped as a result of the injury.
