CM Punk put in the work before his epic WWE WrestleMania 42 match against Roman Reigns.

In the main event of WrestleMania 42 Sunday in Las Vegas, Roman Reigns defeated CM Punk to become the World Heavyweight Champion.

The two WWE legends had a 5-star level match that will be remembered forever, not just as one of the best WrestleMania main events ever, but as one of the best World Title matches in WWE history.

At 47, CM Punk is one of the oldest wrestlers on the WWE main roster, yet that’s not stopping him from being in great shape. When Punk competed at WrestleMania 42, he looked to be in amazing shape because he was. That continued three months later when he returned to beat Sami Zayn to become WWE Champion on the July 6th edition of Raw.

During his 2-hour discussion/interview on the What’s Your Story with Steph McMahon podcast, CM Punk spoke about reaching out to personal trainer Jay Ferruggia six weeks before WrestleMania to help him get into even better shape for the event.

“So six weeks before WrestleMania, I can’t really tell you what set it in motion. I know obviously Chad Gable was posting his workouts on this program by Jay Ferruggia.

I was just motivated to go into WrestleMania looking physically different, looking like ‘Oh, wow, he really busted his ass!’ That was my only goal, it wasn’t a weight, it wasn’t ‘I need a six-pack, I need to do this…’

I called up Jay, he was like ‘I wish you would’ve got to me sooner. We’ve only got six weeks but if you listen to me, and you do what I say, eat what I tell you to eat, I think we can do some damage.’ We did some damage.

I think I showed up at Mania… I didn’t say I was in the best shape of my career, because I’ll always look back to when I was 26 and I originally tried to get the job in the first place.”

CM Punk first got hired by WWE in late 2005, before he turned 27, so he did get the math right. Punk’s WWE main roster debut was in the summer of 2006.

“I Had That Motivation To Look Different” – CM Punk

The Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk spoke more about his diet and mentioned that it was very specific.

“I really just kind of had that motivation to look different, showing up to WrestleMania. Obviously to me, it’s a lifestyle change.

“I told Jay ‘The only thing I’ve really never done – I’ve counted calories and all that other stuff – the big difference is, I’ve never weighed food.’ Six weeks prior to Mania, I bought a food scale, a rice maker, and a freezer.

“I eat meals that have like maybe three ingredients; white rice, 99 blend lean ground venison, and salt. Every morning I take a mirror selfie, I take my temperature and weight, and send it to Jay. He will tell me protein, carbs and fat to eat. It’s very specific.”

At SummerSlam on August 1 & 2 in Minneapolis, CM Punk will put the WWE Title on the line against Cody Rhodes in what will be one of the most highly anticipated WWE matches of the year.
